8th Earl of Ormonde

Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde (see here and here), born c.1467,
mar c.1485 to Margaret Fitzgerald [descendant of Edward I],
built Neigham Castle, near Gowran, Co.Kilkenny, c.1487,
succ 1515,
forced to give up Earldom of Ormonde to Anne Boleyn's father 1527, after Henry VIII fell for her,
in return he was cr 1st Earl of Ossory 1527 [NOT 1528],
after the fall of Anne Boleyn 1536, and the death shortly after without male heir of her father, he succeeded in regaining Earldom of Ormonde,
always numbered as 8th Earl (Boleyn not counted),
set up original Kilkenny College 1538, one of Ireland's oldest surviving schools,
he died 1539, bur St.Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny, SE corner, impressive effigy,
Margaret died 1542, bur impressive effigy beside husband,
had issue:
- Helen Butler,
mar
Donnchadh O'Brien, 2nd Earl of Thomond
and had issue.
- James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde, born c.1496.
His line apparently went extinct 1997, in which case the title will back up 500 years and go down the line of his brother. -
Richard Butler, 1st Viscount Mountgarret
(see here),
died 1571, bur St.Canice's, Kilkenny, SC wall, effigy.
The Earldom of Ormonde is likely now to go to this line.
- Ellice Butler, mar Gerald Fitzgerald and had issue.
