Doug Smith,
the champion flat race jockey,
born 1918.

He was from a farming family of Shottesbrooke (near Lambourn and Newbury), Berkshire.
He was brother of Eph Smith, jockey, who won the Epsom Derby on "Blue Peter" in 1939.
Doug's first win was at Salisbury in 1931, age 13 yrs.
He won the 1000 Guineas in 1946 on "Hypericum" (owner George VI).

He mar pre-1949 to Patricia Winter [born 1925].
Doug was 5 times Champion Flat Race Jockey, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1958, 1959.
He won the 2000 Guineas in 1955 on "Our Babu" (NOT "Our Baby").
He won the 2000 Guineas in 1958 on "Pall Mall" (owner Elizabeth II).
He won the 1000 Guineas in 1959 on "Petite Etoile" (owner Aly Khan).
Retired as jockey 1967, after riding 3,112 winners in 20,009 rides.
He became a trainer.
He trained "Sleeping Partner" to win the Epsom Oaks 1969.
Retired as trainer 1979, after training 500 winners.

They lived at Newmarket (beside racecourse).
Doug died at his home in Newmarket, 12 Apr 1989, age 71 yrs.
Pat lived Loder House, Hamilton Rd, Newmarket.
She died at home, Loder House, 27 Jan 2009, age 83 yrs.
Funeral 11 Feb 2009, Newmarket RC church.
Doug and Patricia had issue:

    She mar Peter Reynolds.
    They had issue:

    1. Elizabeth Reynolds, mar James Moloney and had issue:
      1. Pierce Moloney.
