James Humphreys, of Newport

James Humphreys,
born at Shower, near Newport, Co.Tipperary,
bapt 16 May 1866.
"Humphrys" at dau's birth 1916 and on death cert.
His father died 1881.
Listed in 1901 census with his brother Matthew at Shower. He is "farm assistant", unmarried. His age is totally inaccurate.

He mar Feb 1908 to Mary Healy [born 1875].
She was from Ballinteenoe, Co.Tipperary.
Her uncle Martin Hassett ran the first Post Office in Birdhill, Co.Tipperary. He had to give it up when he opened a pub in 1890. (This pub became "Matt the Thresher", Birdhill.)
Mary took over running the Post Office in Birdhill. She left it to her sister Maggie in 1903.
She went to Newport.
Before her marriage she ran a Post Office and general store, Main St, Newport (and lived in same building).
Paddy Humphreys said: "Their marriage was a made match."
James moved into her house and business in Newport when he married her.

James and Mary ran the business in Newport together.
He is listed at death as "shop keeper and farmer".
He died 23 Jan 1933, Main St, Newport, age 66 yrs. See death cert from here.
He was bur with father at Killoscully, Co.Tipperary.
Mary is listed at death as shopkeeper's widow.
She died 10 April 1953, Newport, age 78 yrs. See death cert from here.
She was bur Killoscully.

He registered father's death 1933, living Newport.
He mar Nora Gleeson [of Portnard, Cappamore, Co.Limerick].
Moved to England.
They lived Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham.
He died Oct 1987, age 76 yrs.
She fl 1987, living Sutton Coldfield.
They had issue:

James junior, born 1919.
Accountant. Office over Bryan Greene's pub, William St, Limerick.
He mar Johanna Kennedy [Jo, born 1923].
Her parents originally had farm in Rearcross, Co.Tipperary. They sold farm, moved to Dublin. Family had pub in Dublin. She was living Dublin at marriage.
In 1950 Jimmy bought a pub in Birdhill, Co.Tipperary, across the road from his granduncle's old pub, "Matt the Thresher".
Lived at the pub in Birdhill. Johanna ran the pub. He installed two petrol pumps by side of pub.
In 1977 he sold the pub in Birdhill.
There is a pub today across the road from "Matt the Thresher", Coopers Bar. This may be it. See street view.
Jimmy moved to Gortlandroe, near Nenagh.
Continued accountancy business in Nenagh.
He died 3 Nov 1987, age 68 yrs. He was buried Birdhill, Co.Tipperary.
Johanna died 6 Aug 2016, age 93 yrs.
Jimmy and Johanna had issue:
1. James Humphreys.
