      1. William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire,
         founded Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, 1871,
         named in honour of his relation the physicist Cavendish,
         mar Blanche Howard and had issue:
         1. Lord Frederick Cavendish (see here), born 1836,
            Chief Secretary for Ireland 1882,
            murdered in Phoenix Park, Dublin, 1882.

• The old Cavendish Laboratory was in the early 20th cent. the scene of the discovery of the structure of the atom, and then in mid-20th cent. the scene of the discovery of the structure of DNA. Cambridge's Physics department has since moved to a new Cavendish Laboratory in West Cambridge.
