1st Duke of Dorset

Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset (see here), born 1688,
Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland 1731-7 and 1751-5,

had issue:

1. Lord John Philip Sackville, born 1713, had issue:
   1. John Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, born 1745,
      died 1799, had issue:
      1. George John Frederick Sackville, 4th Duke of Dorset, born 1793,
         died from a fall from his horse while hunting on Killiney Hill, Co.Dublin, 1815, age 21 yrs. There is a monument on the site.
         The title effectively died with him, since it went then to a middle-aged unmarried cousin, who eventually died 1843. The titles of Dorset became extinct.

      2. Elizabeth Sackville, born 1795,
         mar George John West, 5th Earl De La Warr and had issue.
         This branch inherited Knole.

2. Lord George Sackville, 1st Viscount Sackville, born 1716,
   educ TCD [father was Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, would have lived Dublin Castle],
   a lodge was built for him at "Mount Sackville", Chapelizod, W Dublin.

• Dukes of Dorset

• Named after the 1st Duke:
  • Sackville St, the main street of Dublin. It is now O'Connell St.
  • The name Sackville survives in neighbouring streets.
  • Dorset St, Dublin. This is invariably pronounced "Dor-sett Street".

• The 1st Duke also erected the monument at the site of the Battle of the Boyne. This monument was attacked and destroyed in the 1919-23 period.

• Mount Sackville, Chapelizod, W Dublin, is now a girls' convent school.
