"Yeats"
seems to be more common in the 18th cent.
So I take it as the default.
"Yates"
seems to be more common in the 19th cent.
But the record is confused:
- The older, 18th cent., Yeats family par records
of St.Nicholas', Aberdeen
- "Yeats".
- Barbara Yeats
- "Yeats" in death notice 1791, and
her grave at Nigg Bay, but "Yates" in
family Bible when she was alive.
-
Robina Barbara Yates Gibbon,
born 1821, died 1824
- "Yeats" in family bible
(apparently written there by her parents)
and burial record.
I may have just standardised on "Yates" for her because it was Barbara Yates Gibbon who
wrote it in the family tree.
-
Barbara Yates Gibbon, 19th cent.
- spelt it "Yates" herself in late 19th cent.
