Portmahon House - The rear

The rear (Luas side, formerly canal side) of Portmahon House, Rialto, Co.Dublin.
The Luas red line now runs down the old canal at the back of the house. The "Rialto" stop is at the bridge.

Portmahon House, back view (from the N, from the dried-up canal), 1985.

Portmahon House, back view, 1997.

Portmahon House, back view, 2007.
Rear gate overgrown. See full size.

The rear gate. Photo 2012.
It is thought that this was the old main entrance (from the canal side).
The wall curves in on both sides towards the gate.
This looks like a front gate (from the days of horses, not cars), not a back gate.
See full size.
See close-up and other shot and angled shot.

From the other side (the inside) we can see the wall curving in.
It definitely looks like a front gate, not a back gate.

Movie of the rear (from N), 2007.
Pans from W to E.
Shows how close the back would have been to the canal (now LUAS line).
