Hedingham was awarded to Aubrey de Vere by 1086.
The castle fortifications (now gone) were built around 1100.
The castle keep (which survives) was built around 1140.
Seat of Earls of Oxford (cr 1141).
Birthplace of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford in 1550.
