Fletcher

Originally from Scotland.
This branch became a prominent political family of Rhodesia.


Robert Alexander Fletcher,
born 1865, South Africa.
He mar Annie Alice Macdonald.
Moved to Rhodesia.
He went to Bulawayo, Matabeland North, W Rhodesia, in 1894. One of the first white settlers there.
His wife joined him 1895.
Settled at Umvatcha farm, Bulawayo, c.1903.
He was Minister of Agriculture in Rhodesia 1928-1932. (Rhodesia was self-governing after 1922.)
The Land Apportionment Act of 1930 restricted black access to land.
Commander of the Order of the British Empire 1939.
They had issue:


Hugh Murray Fletcher,
born 1894, South Africa. "Church of England".
His mother took him as an infant on a "nightmarish journey" to join father in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, in 1895.
In WW1 he served in the 1st Rhodesian Regiment in German South West Africa.
Later joined the Royal Flying Corps in England. Served as a pilot in the Near East.
Returned to Rhodesia in 1919.
He mar 1922 to Bessie Cashel.
They lived in Bulawayo, Rhodesia.
He served in the Department of Native Affairs in Rhodesia until 1953, when he retired.
He died 1965, age 71 yrs.
She fl 1976, living Bulawayo.
They had issue:


  1. Robert Fletcher.

  2. Hugh Fletcher, mar Annette Esterhuyse and had issue:
    1. Anne Fletcher.
    2. Susan Fletcher.
    3. Celia Fletcher.
    4. Hugh Fletcher.
    5. Linda Fletcher.
    6. Jean Fletcher.

  3. Aileen Fletcher [or "Ailenn Isobel"].
  4. Elizabeth Fletcher.
  5. Alan Fletcher.
