The Montgomery legacy

In his will 1837, Rev. George Augustus Montgomery left money to build a school at Bishopstone, and to repair the church, and to provide for charity.

He asked that an explanation of this legacy be "carved on a tablet, and inserted in the South Aisle over the entrance arch", and it was.

He left money for "the purchase of coals for the poor". The "Montgomery Coal Charity" is still in existence today, and is still being used to provide small amounts of charity in the parish.
