O'Callaghan of Co.Kerry
Or "Callaghan".
Of
Ballynabrennagh,
NE of Tralee, Co.Kerry.
There were a number of different (and presumably inter-related)
Callaghan/O'Callaghan families in Ballynabrennagh,
all apparently in
Ballynabrennagh Upper townland.

This is the house belonging to the

Our family - O'Callaghan of Ballynabrennagh
We start with the family I descend from.
Proof that our
John (died 1903)
is the son of the following
Denis:
- Our John inherits the farm at Ballynabrennagh.
 -
He must be "John Callaghan junior"
listed at Ballynabrennagh in
[Griffiths Valuation, 1853].
We know who the older John is.
 - Our John must inherit it from Denis or John or Patrick
   in [Tithe Survey, 1824].
 - Our John's gravestone has him age 76 (born 1827).
 - Denis has a son John bapt 1827.

 - Denis' wife is Ellen.
 - Our John's eldest son is Denis
and eldest dau is Ellen
(would be after grandparents).
 - Too many coincidences. I regard it as proved unless other evidence turns up.

The following is also O'Callaghan of Ballynabrennagh.
DNA tests prove this line is definitely related to my line above.

We start with:

- James O'Callaghan,

or James Callaghan.
Father of children born 1824 to 1835.
He was of Ballynabrennagh,
 NE of Tralee.
"Denis Callaghan"
sp the bapt of James' son in 1824.
Our Denis above and this James might be brothers.

The following is also O'Callaghan of Ballynabrennagh.
DNA tests prove this line is definitely related to my line above.

We start with:

Think he might be identical with the following John:
In favour: John of Ballynabrennagh.
 This John's heir is
Michael.
Against: This John would be quite old having children.
Age given at death could be inaccurate, of course.
-
  John Callaghan,
   born 1777.
Farmer,
of Ballynabrennagh,
 NE of Tralee, Co.Kerry.

 "John Callaghan"
 is listed
in Ballynabrennagh Upper
in [Tithe Survey, 1824].
His wife died before 1873.
At death he is farmer, widower.
 He
died Ballynabrennagh, 31 Jan 1873 [admin] or 1 Feb 1873 [death cert], age 96 yrs. .

 See death cert
from here.

Will proved 21 Feb 1873.
See admin
from here.
The will was probably burnt in 1922.
He had issue:

- Michael Callaghan,
farmer, of Ballynabrennagh.
Registered father's death 1873.
One of the executors of father's will.
Could be identical to
this Michael, son of John.

 This family must be related:

The following
Eugene and Ellen Callaghan
could be the parents of both of these:
A baptism for a Patrick is found, but not one for a John.
But the theory still looks likely.
It may be that Patrick and John are brothers.
And Denis and James would be some cousins of them.

-
Eugene Callaghan.
He (or maybe his wife) is
listed at mar 1785 as of Ballynahoulort, Tralee par
(NW side of Tralee,
see map).
He
mar 22 November 1785
 [Tralee RC par records]
to Ellen Savage.
See entry
from here.
Mar wit by Thadeus Collins and John Silk and Thomas Slattery.

Living Ballynahoulort at dau's bapt 1786.
Looks like
living Ballynabrennagh
 at dau's bapt 1798.
Eugene and Ellen
had issue:
- Mary Callaghan,
bapt 5 November 1786
 [Tralee RC par records],
sp Cornelius McCarthy and Margaret Savage,
see entry
from here.
 - Patrick Callaghan,
bapt 25 May 1792
 [Tralee RC par records],
sp Patrick Baily and Mary McDonnel.
He may be this Patrick Callaghan.

 - Ellen Callaghan,
bapt 24 November 1794
 [Tralee RC par records],
sp John Leahy and Margaret Callaghan.

 - Margaret Callaghan,
bapt sometime in April 1798 (days not noted)
 [Tralee RC par records],
sp Denis Donoghue and Mary Connell,
see entry
from here.

Baptism of Margaret Callaghan, April 1798.
Looks like living Ballynabrennagh ("Baile na mBreatnach").

 Other

- Deirdre Flanagan
remembered a connection with
O'Callaghan of Mallow, Co.Cork.
Possibly some connection with Mallow Castle.

 - There was a suggestion that the father of our John O'Callaghan was
O'Callaghan of Buttevant, Co.Cork.
This seems false, but maybe there is some connection.
