He was a noted early astronomer.
He challenged the Ptolemaic model centuries before Copernicus.
The 16th century astronomer Tycho Brahe used his planetary tables.
He died 1284.

• Claimed Muslim ancestry of Maria de Padilla:
  • It has been claimed that Maria de Padilla descends from Zaida of Seville, the Muslim mistress of Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile, and through her from Muslim families descended from the Prophet Muhammad. And hence the Prophet Muhammad is ancestor of most of the Western Royal houses.
  • Maria de Padilla is the ancestor of every English monarch from Edward IV (succ 1461) to the present day except for Henry VII.
