John Hotham,
of the village of Scorborough, N of Beverley, East Yorkshire, this is N of Hull (Kingston upon Hull), see map,
NOT Scarborough, North Yorkshire,
mar 3rdly to Jane Legard [dau of Richard Legard]
and had issue:


  1. Sir John Hotham, 1st Baronet (see here and search),
    prominent Parliamentarian in English Civil War 1642-51,
    born est c.1582,
    seat at Scorborough Hall (since destroyed and replaced),
    mar 1stly, 16th Feb 1607 [using [NJ] format], to Katherine Rodes [dau of Sir John Rodes, Kt, poss. Rhodes] and had issue:

    1. Frances Hotham, born est c.1608,
      mar 1627 to Sir Philip Stapleton, Kt [born 1603] and had issue.

    2. Sir John Hotham, Kt,
      born est c.1610,
      prominent Parliamentarian with his father in English Civil War 1642-51,
      beheaded on Tower Hill, 2nd Jan 1645 [using [NJ] format], the day before his father.

    mar 2ndly, 1614, to Anne Rokeby and had issue,
    mar 3rdly to Frances Legard,
    mar 4thly to Catharine Bamburgh,
    fought on continent in Thirty Years' War post-1618,
    cr Baronet 4th Jan 1622 [using [NJ] format],
    mar 5thly, 1635, to Sarah Anlaby,

    Governor of Hull, deprived of this office by Charles I 1639, he declared for the Parliamentarian cause,
    he and his son John led Parliamentary forces that seized the arsenal at Hull, Jan 1642, he became the Military Governor of Hull,
    in Apr 1642 he refused Charles I entry into the city of Hull, Charles I declared him a traitor, this led to the Siege of Hull July 1642, the first major action of the English Civil War, the Royalists failed to take the city,
    later in the war, he and his son John fell out with the Parliamentarians, they negotiated to join the Royalist side, this was discovered and they were both arrested by the Parliamentarian June 1643, and eventually both executed,
    he was beheaded on Tower Hill, 3rd Jan 1645 [using [NJ] format], age est c.63 yrs, the day after his son.
    Ancestor of Hotham, Baronets (later Baron Hotham).
