My ancestors - Blennerhassett - Contents

Flimby, Cumberland

The Manor of Flimby, on the coast of Cumberland (Cumbria).
The Manor of Flimby was purchased by patent roll dated 1546 by Joan Blennerhassett, widow, and Thomas Blennerhassett.
It was thought she might be the widow of John Blennerhassett, but there are problems with this. See discussion.

In any case, Flimby became the seat of Thomas Blennerhassett.
He was granted lands in Ireland in 1590.
He stayed in England. His son settled in Ireland.
Thomas was ancestor of Blennerhassett of Flimby.

William Blennerhassett succeeded to Flimby in 1765.
He built the new Flimby Hall (the current building) in 1766. It has initials "W.B." and date 1766.
William Blennerhassett sold it out of the family in 1772.

It is now Flimby Hall farm.

Patent roll of 1546

Blennerhassett acquired Flimby apparently by a Patent Roll in 1546.

From the Patent Rolls of 38 Henry VIII (which was Apr 1546 to the death of the King in Jan 1547).
The above is p.167 of Vol 21, Part 2 of Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII.
To top right, Thomas Dalston and wife to Joan Blennerhassett, widow, and Thomas Blennerhassett, "a moiety of the wood and lands called Flemebye Parke, in tenure of Wm. Lambert, in Flemeby, Cumb."
This suggests the date of the patent roll is 18 Oct 1546.

Extract from entry for Flimby on pp.108-109 of vol.2 of [Nicolson and Burn, 1777].

Extract from entry for Flimby on pp.262-263 of vol.2 of [Hutchinson, 1794].

Extract from entry for Flimby on pp.358-359 of [Whellan, 1860].
This repeats 11 June 1546 and John Blennerhassett from above.
