Blennerhassett of Flimby, Cumberland
Here are pieces of evidence for the family of
Blennerhassett of
Flimby, Cumberland.
This would be the family of
Thomas Blennerhassett of Flimby,
who was granted land in Ireland in 1590.
Piecing these together into a family tree is difficult.
Thomas may have had brothers.
And there is uncertainty about
who his father was.
Flimby Hall
stayed in the Blennerhassett family until sold in 1772.
[Burkes Irish, 1976]
tries to put all the pieces together into a tree of
Blennerhassett of Flimby,
but it is difficult.
Note "probably" and "perhaps" and "probably" and "probably" and "probable".
Blennerhassett acquired Flimby
apparently by a
Patent Roll in 1546.
From the Patent Rolls
of 38
Henry VIII (which was Apr 1546 to the death of the King in Jan 1547).
The above is
p.167
of
Vol 21, Part 2
of
Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII.
To top right, Thomas Dalston and wife to
Joan Blennerhassett, widow, and Thomas Blennerhassett,
"a moiety of the wood and lands called Flemebye Parke, in tenure of Wm. Lambert, in Flemeby, Cumb."
This suggests the date of the patent roll is 18 Oct 1546.
Extract from entry for
Flimby on
pp.108-109
of vol.2 of [Nicolson and Burn, 1777].
- The details here are all different.
- It says the date of the patent roll is 11 June 1546.
- It says "nine messauges".
- It says it is to John Blennerhassett.
- None of this matches the above. Maybe there is a different patent roll.
- Note that
[KAM, 1919]
repeats the nine messauges and John Blennerhassett,
but says it is 30 Henry VIII (1538).
- No such patent roll can be found in 1546 or 1538 in
Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII.

Extract from entry for
Flimby on

This repeats 11 June 1546 and John Blennerhassett
from above.

of vol.2 of
[Nicolson and Burn, 1777].
John Blennerhassett of Flimby presents the new vicar to the

Some later deeds of Blennerhassett of Flimby.
These
are interesting because they link Blennerhassett of Flimby to
Mealo and Ormesby,
the lands of
John Blennerhassett of Allonby.
This is evidence that John Blennerhassett of Allonby
is father or close relation of Thomas Blennerhassett of Flimby.
