James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormond,
born October 17, 1304.

He succ his
father 1321.
He became 7th Chief Butler Of Ireland, but did not inherit title Earl of Carrick.
Seat at
Gowran, Co.Kilkenny.
He mar 1327 to
Alianore de Bohun
[grand-dau of
Edward I].
He was cr Earl of Ormond in 1328 by (his wife's 1st cousin)
Edward III.
He
died January 6, 1338, Gowran.
He was
buried in
St. Mary's Collegiate Church, Gowran.
They had issue:
- Pernel Butler, or Petronella,
mar Gilbert Talbot, 3rd Baron Talbot and had issue.
- James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond,
born October 4, 1331.
He was called "The Noble Earl" because of his Royal ancestry.
He
succ 1338.
He
mar 1346 to Elizabeth D'Arcy.
Lord Justice of Ireland (chief governor)
1359-1360 and 1364-1365 and 1376-1378.
He
died October 18, 1382, at Knocktopher Castle, Co.Kilkenny.
[Butler memorial, St.Canice's Cathedral]
says he was bur Knocktopher Friary, Co.Kilkenny.
2nd Earl and Elizabeth had issue:
- Eleanor Butler,
mar Gerald Fitzgerald, 3rd Earl of Desmond
and had issue.
- James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond,
purchased
Kilkenny Castle 1391.
