Muriel Jackson

Muriel Jackson,
born 9 Apr 1882, after her father's death.
Her mother re-married in Nov 1882 and moved to Dublin.
It was thought that Muriel lived for a time when young at her mother's family's house, Middlemount House, Queen's Co. (Co.Laois).
A neighbour of hers in Ringsend, Dublin, said he once worked on the estate where Muriel lived.
She is probably Muriel Jackson, CoI, nurse, single, age 17 (born 1884), born Co.Tipperary, who is listed in 1901 census with a family in Co.Down.
The story was that her family was wealthy. She came to Dublin with a cousin, and she smoked, drank and gambled. Lost contact with family except the cousin.
This makes some sense. The cousin was her 1st cousin Anna Barton, who married 1905 to Edward Shortt. However she did not lose all contact with her mother. Her mother came to live with her in old age.

Muriel is listed at son's birth 1905 as of 17 Ovoca Rd, South Circular Road, Dublin (see map). No father is listed on the birth cert.
At son's birth 1906 Muriel is listed at 10 Upper St. Columba's Rd, Drumcondra, Co.Dublin. No father is listed on the birth cert.
At son's birth 1907, Michael Flanagan is listed as the father. He is said to be commercial agent, of 5 Prussia St, Dublin.

Muriel settled at 9 Somerset St, South Lotts Rd, Ringsend, Dublin (see map).
She lived there from 1910-1911 to her death in 1934. Her family lived there afterwards until 2002.
Jackson are not yet at 9 Somerset St in [Thom's, 1910, p.1804], which lists a "Mrs. Killeen" there.
Muriel and the children are listed in April 1911 census at 9 Somerset St (census numbers match house numbers). Lists them as using her surname Jackson.
The census entry has a "Michael Jackson" living with them, but that is clearly a fake name. "Michael Jackson" is said to be a "commercial traveller", age 38, born Co.Dublin. This seems like a disguised Michael Flanagan, except he is probably not with them either. At this point, she is pregnant by another man, so her relationship with Michael Flanagan is probably over.
1911 census lists them all as Church of Ireland. That would be Muriel's faith. Children were brought up Protestant. Michael Flanagan was Catholic.

1. Phyllis Jackson,
   Muriel Phyllis Jackson, born 23 June 1911, 9 Somerset St, Dublin.
   Birth cert has her born Muriel Phyllis Flanagan. Shows Michael Flanagan as father. See birth cert from here.
   "Miss P. Jackson" of 9 Somerset St is in a list of crossword competition winners in Sunday Independent, May 28, 1939.
   She mar Joe Hendley.
   She died 1979.
   They had issue:
   1. Brian Hendley.
   2. Paulene Hendley.

Muriel continued to live at 9 Somerset St, Ringsend.
It is incredible that she held on to all her children without a husband, in those days. Her children were always devoted to her afterwards.
"Ml. Jackson" (must be Muriel) is listed at 9 Somerset St in [Thom's, 1914, p.1834].
Her mother came to live with her in old age. She has an address of 9 Somerset St when she died in 1919 in the Workhouse, South Dublin.

Muriel had issue by Mr. Y:

1. Edna Jackson,
   born Mary Edna Frances Jackson, 9 March 1921 [mother age 38] at 9 Somerset St, Ringsend.
   See birth cert from here. Birth cert has a fictional "Michael Jackson" as the father, and claims Muriel's married name is Jackson and maiden name is "Roe" (her mother's maiden name).
   Edna went to England.
   She mar Leslie Collins [English].
   They had issue:
   1. Graham Collins.
   2. Paul Collins.
   3. Joy Collins.

Muriel continued to live at 9 Somerset St, Ringsend.
Michael Flanagan died in 1929.
"Ml. Jackson" is listed at 9 Somerset St in [Thom's, 1931, p.1646].

Muriel dies, 1934:
At death 1934 she is "Muriel Jackson". She and son Ronald are living 9 Somerset St. She is listed as widow of (commercial) traveller.
She died 9 Somerset St, 28 Oct 1934, age 52 yrs.

She was bur Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. "Muriel Jackson" on grave. No husband listed.
"Ml. Jackson" is listed at 9 Somerset St in [Thom's, 1935, p.1548].

Has a "Michael Jackson" living with them, but that must be a fictional reference to Michael Flanagan.
At this point, Muriel is pregnant with another man's child, so it seems unlikely she is still with Michael Flanagan.

Father is given as Michael Flanagan. But DNA says this is false. He is not the father.

Birth cert of Edna Jackson, 9 March 1921.
Has a fictional "Michael Jackson" as the father. Occupation illegible.

Dublin addresses

Muriel and (a possibly fictional version of) Michael are associated with various Dublin addresses before Muriel settled at 9 Somerset St, Ringsend.
Think these are all just short term rented lodgings. We have looked at these but cannot see any link to Flanagan. We just get the names of random landlords.

• Muriel is listed in 1905 at 17 Ovoca Rd, South Circular Road.
  • [Thom's, 1905] lists a John McLoughlin there.

• Muriel is listed in 1906 at 10 Upper St. Columba's Rd, Drumcondra.
  • [Thom's, 1905, p.1745] lists a Mr. G.P. Cussen there.

• Michael is listed in 1907 as of 5 Prussia St.
  • A "Mrs. Duffy" is listed there in [Thom's, 1901, p.1505] and [Thom's, 1905, p.1624].
  • The 1901 census shows Mrs. Duffy as a widow with boarders.
  • [Thom's, 1910, p.1648] lists a Miss. E. Kelly there.
  • The location is 5.1 and 5.2 in 1911 census.
