Cochran

Sometimes "Cochrane".


Hugh Cochran, shipmaster, Aberdeen, in an ad in Aberdeen Press and Journal, 20 January 1783.
It says he lives next to the sugar house on the shore at Aberdeen.


  
Hugh Cochran,
or Cochrane.
He was from the North of England.
Captain of a merchant ship.
He mar 4 Oct 1767 to Martha Gibbon [bapt 10 Sept 1737].
Martha was buried 9 Feb 1826 at Nigg Bay, age 88 yrs.
Hugh also died 1826, bur Nigg Bay.
They had issue:


  1. Jean Cochran,
    mar --- Welsh and had issue:

    1. Jane Welsh,
      mar --- Williams.

  2. Hugh Cochran, mar --- Hull.
  3. James Cochran.
  4. Martha Cochran.


  5. Alexander Cochran, born 1775.
    He would be named after grandfather Alexander Gibbon.
    He was a shipowner in Aberdeen.
    He mar 1stly to Elizabeth Roger [dau of George Roger, goldsmith, Aberdeen].
    He mar 2ndly, 31 Dec 1818, to Elizabeth Campbell [born 1785, dau of William Campbell, "horse-hirer"].
    They mar at St.Nicholas', Aberdeen.
    He died 19 Oct 1837, age 62 yrs, bur Nigg Bay.
    A board of the Shipmasters Society at Aberdeen Maritime Museum shows that "Capt. Alexander Cochran, of Aberdeen" bequeathed £100 in 1837 for the Poor of the Shipmasters Society.
    Elizabeth died 1 Aug 1848, age 63 yrs, bur Nigg Bay.
    Alexander had issue by 1st wife:

    1. F.J. Cochran [son].
      He was an advocate, of Aberdeen.
      Laird of Balfour, S of Birse, SE of Aboyne, Aberdeenshire.
      He mar --- Smith.
      He died pre-1879.
      They had issue:

      1. Alexander Cochran.
      2. (dau) Cochran.
      3. (son) Cochran.
      4. (son) Cochran.
      5. Margaret Cochran.


  6. Sophia Cochran,
    mar --- Thompson.
