Memoir by Dick Humphreys of 1916 Rising

Memoir by Dick Humphreys of the 1916 Rising, in which he fought in the GPO, and in which his uncle The O'Rahilly was killed in action.

• From notes written by Dick on toilet paper in Wakefield Prison, May 1916.
• The first version (shown here) was published as "A Rebel's Diary" by "Risteárd Mac Amlaoibh" in The Belvederian, 1917, pp.14-25.
• Dick later revised the memoir. Revised copy is in Ms 18,829 in [NLI]. This was published in [Jeffery, 2006].
• See also copy in Ms 78,825.
• The memoir is quoted in [Caulfield, 1963] under the name "Richard MacAuliffe".

Boland's Mills garrison v. GPO garrison

Dick was in the Boland's Mills garrison but actually spent the Rising at the GPO.
He was in the 3rd Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers, under Eamon de Valera, which occupied Boland's Mills.
However Dick spent the Rising with his uncle The O'Rahilly at the GPO.
