Jeffrey
Probably our family
This is probably our family:
-
Alexander Jaffrey.
At dau's bapt 1761 he is living Loanhead,
SE of Leochel-Cushnie,
Leochel-Cushnie parish,
Aberdeenshire
(S of Alford,
see modern map
and 1843-1882 map).
At son's bapt 1763 he is living Norham, beside Loanhead.
At son's bapt 1769 he is living Loanhead.
Must be same place for all 3 baptisms.
He
had issue:
- Anna Jaffrey,
bapt 8 Aug 1761,
Leochel-Cushnie parish.
See bapt entry.
-
Peter Jaffrey,
bapt 29 May 1763,
Leochel-Cushnie parish.
See bapt entry.
- Alexander Jaffrey,
bapt 6 Feb 1769,
Leochel-Cushnie parish.
See bapt entry.

Norham and Loanhead, Leochel-Cushnie parish, on 1843-1882 map.
It is interesting there is a "Reekie" here,
since Alexander Jeffrey is at Reekie in 1829-1834.
But think it is coincidence.
Alexander's children are bapt at Alford. He is at the Reekie in Alford parish.
Our family
Peter above is probably identical with:
-
Peter Jeffrey,
born 1764 [death record].
Listed at marriage as
of Alford parish, Aberdeenshire.
He
mar 5 July 1791, Alford, to
Agnes Tytler.
See
marriage entry.
She is also listed as of Alford parish at mar.
She is (most likely) Agnes Tytler, bapt 14 June 1764, Alford, dau of James Tytler,
of
Knowehead, S of Alford
(see
map).
See
bapt entry.
Or she could be Agnes Tytler, bapt 29 June 1758, Alford, dau of Robert Tytler,
of
Bandley, E of Alford
(see
map).
See
bapt entry.
Their
dau Agnes was born at Alford.
Their names are confirmed on their dau Agnes' death cert.
This lists Peter as "farmer and miller".
At death he is listed as
"Peter Jeffrey, Elder",
formerly miller, Mid Mill, W of Alford.
He
died 4 Jan 1847, age 83 yrs.
See death record at Alford,
which apparently lists dates of death not burial.
Note his dau Agnes
was living Mid Mill in 1847.
Peter and Agnes
had issue:
- Agnes Jeffrey,
born 1798 (death cert, grave) or 1799 (census) or 1801 (census),
born Alford [according to 1851 census],
mar pre-1828 to
Peter Murray
and had issue.
We say DNA proven because there is a match with
the family of
Alexander Jeffrey of Alford below.
- Peter Jeffrey.
His existence implied by his father being called "Peter Jeffrey, Elder".
"Peter Jeffrey" witnessed the bapt of Sarah Murray 1828.
"Peter Jeffrey" witnessed the bapt of Peter Murray 1834.
Marriage of
Peter Jeffrey and Agnes Tytler, 5 July 1791, Alford.

Death of
Peter Jeffrey, 1847.
See full size.
DNA related. Probably brother of Agnes.
There is a DNA match of our family
with the following family of Alexander Jeffrey of Alford.
The baptisms make Alexander Jeffrey look like brother of Agnes Jeffrey above.
Some Ancestry trees indeed have Alexander as son of Peter above, but it is unclear what the proof is.
- Alexander Jeffrey,
born 1801 (grave) or 1807 (census),
born Aberdeenshire.
Lived Reekie, near Alford.
Looks like brother of Agnes Jeffrey.
Peter Murray
witnesses the baptism of Alexander's children in Alford, 1829 and 1830.
"Alexander Jeffrey" witnesses the baptism of
Peter Murray's children in Alford, 1830 and 1832.
Alexander emigrated to America, 1834-37.
No more Alexander Jeffrey appearances in Murray baptisms after he goes to America.
Other Jeffrey of Alford
- Alexander Jeffrey,
mar Isabel Malcolmson,
at children's bapts 1797-1804 they are living Ardgathen, W side of Alford
(see map),
had issue:
- Alexander Jeffrey,
bapt 8 Dec 1797, Alford.
See baptism entry.
Must have died young.
- Margaret Jeffrey,
bapt 15 Dec 1800, Alford.
See baptism entry.
Listed with brother at Wellheads in 1841 census.
She apparently mar 1843, Alford, to George Wilson.
(todo) See marriage.
- Alexander Jeffrey,
bapt 20 Mar 1804, Alford.
See baptism entry.
He and Margaret are listed
in 1841 census
at Wellheads, S side of Alford. He is farmer.
With them in 1841 census is Farquharson Murray, age 10.
He is nephew (by marriage) of Agnes Jeffrey above.
Maybe Alexander and Margaret are relations of Agnes.
But they cannot be her siblings.
Alexander apparently mar 1844, Alford, to Agnes Berry.
(todo) See marriage.
- Agnes Jeffrey is probably not the following:
-
Agness Jeffery, born 31 Oct 1802,
dau of Peter Jeffery, smith, Ryslaw,
Fogo parish, Scottish Borders.
She was
bapt 31 Oct 1802, Fogo.
See bapt entry.
This is a long way from Aberdeenshire.
And she would not say age 40 in 1841 census if she was under 40.
