Mahony
Marriage of Anne Mahony and John Kickham,
16 July 1827
[Cashel RC par records].
--- Mahony,
family later rendered as O'Mahony.
Farmer,
of near
Cashel, Co.Tipperary.
Mahony of Mocklershill:
-
The tradition is that the Fenian's Mahony grandparents
were of Mocklershill (or "Mockler's Hill"), Magorban par
(some distance E of Cashel,
on the road to Fethard,
see map)
and this is where the Fenian was born in 1828.
-
[Maher, 1955, pp.226-227]
claims to identify the Mahony house, and
says
the old name of Mocklershill was "Cnoicin-a-Ghabha"
or Knickeenagow,
which was the inspiration for the name of the Fenian's fictional village "Knocknagow".
Mahony of Palmer's-hill:
-
[Comerford, 1979, App.2]
says it is not certain that Mocklershill was the Mahony house.
He notes that Mahony only held 2 acres
at Mocklershill
in
[Tithe Survey, 1830],
and one might expect the family that married with Kickham to be wealthier.
-
Comerford says there was a more prosperous Mahony at Palmer's-hill, St. Patricksrock par,
on the NE side of Cashel, Co.Tipperary
(see map).
He suggests the placenames could have got confused.
-
However, no Mahony is found
at
Palmershill
in
[Tithe Survey, 1827].
Did Comerford see another Tithe listing?
- Comerford notes that "Cnoicin-a-Ghabha" did exist as the old name of
an unknown place near Cashel,
but there is no proof it was either
Mocklershill or Palmer's Hill.
There was a tradition that this family was related
to the Young Irelander and Fenian
John O'Mahony
but there is no convincing evidence of this
[Comerford, 1979].
Mahony
had issue:
- Mary Mahony,
born 1796,
mar pre-1827 to Thomas Kickham [born 1800]
and had issue.
- Anne Mahony,
or Nancy,
"Anne Teresa Mahony" at son's bapt 1834,
[Ms 8138]
says she was of Killusty or Killurney,
but that must be confusion with John Kickham's mother,
who was of Killusty,
Killurney is in Temple-etney par, S of Killusty
(see map),
(todo) see
[Ms 8138]
again,
Anne is described as of Cashel at mar,
mar 16 July 1827
[Cashel RC par records]
to John Kickham
[born probably c.1805]
and had issue.
Parents of the Fenian Charles Joseph Kickham.
