My ancestors - Martindale - Contents

Martindale of West Newton, Cumberland

Our Martindale ancestry is in fact uncertain.
Joan Martindale married John Blennerhassett, and their lives can be sketched out.
The question is whether they are parents of Thomas Blennerhassett of Flimby.

William Martyndale.
According to [Case of 1529-1532] he is grandfather of:

  1. James Martindale,
    or de Martindale, or Martyndale,
of West Newton (or Westnewton), in Allerdale, Cumberland.
West Newton is NW of Blennerhasset village, and E (inland) of Allonby which is on the coast.

    He mar Margaret ----.
He died and his wife re-married before [Case of 1529-1532].
So looks like he died before 1529.
    Margaret remarried to Cuthbert Musgrave.
[Case of 1529-1532] is about James' estate, consisting of "The manor of Newton and land there and in Allonby by Sea, Grinsdale, Ormesby, Longrigg, Mealrigg, Lownthwaite and Kelsick [in Bromfield]. Cumberland."
    James and Margaret had issue:

    1. Joan Martindale,
      or Janet.
      Co-heiress of her father's estate.
She mar John Blennerhasset and had issue.
They were married before [Plea Roll of 1538].

    2. Elizabeth Martindale.
      Co-heiress of her father's estate.
She mar Anthony Barker [of Carlisle].
They were married before [Plea Roll of 1538].

    3. Isabel Martindale.
      See Wikitree.
      Co-heiress of her father's estate.
Unmarried as at [Plea Roll of 1538].
She mar 1stly to Humphrey Dacre.
They are married as at [Knights fees, 1543-1544].
      He died.

She mar 2ndly to William Musgrave, MP [born 1518] and had issue.
They are married as at [Plea Roll of 1549].
They lived at Hayton Castle, Hayton, Cumberland.
      She apparently died before 1595.
      His will dated 1595.
      He died 1597.

    4. Mabel Martindale.
      Co-heiress of her father's estate.
Unmarried as at [Plea Roll of 1538].
      She mar Cuthbert Radcliffe.
They are married as at [Knights fees, 1543-1544].
They are married as at [Plea Roll of 1549].

West Newton (the Martindale estate)

West Newton on pp.163-164 of vol.2 of [Nicolson and Burn, 1777].
This says that [Knights fees, 1543-1544] lists John Blennerhassett as a one-fifth heir of the Martindale estate, through his marriage.

Extract from entry for West Newton on pp.297-298 of vol.2 of [Hutchinson, 1794].
He does not know where Ormesby is. [Whellan, 1860] shows it is joined to the Manor of Allonby.
