Martindale of West Newton, Cumberland
Our Martindale ancestry is in fact uncertain.
Joan Martindale
married John Blennerhassett,
and their lives can be sketched out.
The question is whether they are parents of Thomas Blennerhassett of Flimby.
William Martyndale.
According to
[Case of 1529-1532]
he is grandfather of:
-
James Martindale,
or de Martindale, or Martyndale,
of
West Newton (or Westnewton),
in Allerdale, Cumberland.
West Newton is NW of
Blennerhasset village,
and E (inland) of
Allonby which is on the coast.
He mar Margaret ----.

So looks like he died before 1529.

[Case of 1529-1532]
is about James' estate, consisting of
"The manor of Newton and land there and in Allonby by Sea, Grinsdale, Ormesby, Longrigg, Mealrigg, Lownthwaite

West Newton (the Martindale estate)
West Newton on
pp.163-164
of vol.2 of
[Nicolson and Burn, 1777].
This says that
[Knights fees, 1543-1544]
lists
John Blennerhassett
as a one-fifth heir of the Martindale estate, through his marriage.
Extract from entry for
West Newton on
pp.297-298
of vol.2 of [Hutchinson, 1794].
He does not know where Ormesby is.
[Whellan, 1860]
shows it is joined to the Manor of Allonby.
