mar 1189 to Isabel de Clare, Countess Strigoil [born c.1174, descendant of Charlemagne and of Edward the Elder],
her family's title re-created for him 1189,
rebuilt Pembroke Castle, Wales, 1189,
rebuilt Kilkenny Castle 1192,
rebuilt Chepstow Castle, Wales, c.1200,
founded New Ross, Co.Wexford,
founded Tintern Abbey (also here), New Ross, Co.Wexford, c.1200 [see [Marsden and McLaren, 1997]],
built Carlow Castle 1208 (ruin survives off Castle Hill, W end of Carlow town centre),
rebuilt Usk Castle, Usk, Wales, c.1212-19,
through his wife inherited Dunamase, Co.Laois,
first mention of Dunamase Castle is 1215, when John ordered Geoffrey Lutterel to hand it over to Marshal,
appears in King John by Shakespeare,
Governor of England 1216-9 (in minority of Henry III),
died 1219, age 73 yrs, bur Temple Church, London,

Isabel died 1220, age c.46 yrs, bur St. Mary's, New Ross, Co.Wexford,
had issue:


  1. Maud Marshal,
    mar 1stly to Hugh Bigod and had issue:

    1. Isabel de Bigod,
      mar 1stly to Gilbert de Lacy and had issue,
      mar 2ndly to John FitzGeoffrey and had issue.

    mar 2ndly to William de Warenne and had issue.


  2. William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke,
    founded Dominican Friary, Kilkenny, 1225,
    this survives, also called The Black Friary,
    died 1231.

  3. Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke,
    founded Franciscan Friary, Kilkenny, 1234,
    ruin of this survives in grounds of Smithwicks brewery,
    died 1234.

  4. Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke,
    bur Temple Church, London.

  5. Isabella Marshal, born 1200, mar Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Gloucester and had issue.

  6. Sibyl Marshal, mar William de Ferrers, 6th Earl of Derby and had issue.

  7. Eva Marshal, mar William de Braose, Lord of Abergavenny and had issue.

  8. Joan Marshal, had issue:

    1. Joan, Countess of Pembroke,
      mar William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke [her family's title re-created for him] and had issue.
