Day

Marriage of John Day and Ann Fairchild, 21 June 1802.
From here.

John Day.
See entry in tree by Shirley Jones.
He was a stone mason.
At marriage he is described as of St Edward's parish, Cambridge.
He married a woman from Stamford, Lincolnshire (40 miles away as the crow flies). They lived in Cambridge for a time, then later in Stamford.
We do not know where John is from. He may be from Stamford (would explain how they met) and only went to Cambridge for the work.

He mar 21 June 1802 to Ann Fairchild [bapt 15 May 1780].
They mar at Stamford. She was from Stamford.
Living Cambridge for children's baptisms 1803 to 1809.
Moved back to Stamford 1809-1811.
Living Stamford for children's baptisms 1811 to 1822.
Listed as "mason" at children's baptisms in Stamford.
In 1826 the will of Ann's aunt Sarah Hotchkin refers to her niece Ann Fairchild, now "Ann the wife of John Day of [Stamford] Stone Mason".
John is not listed under "Stone and Marble Masons" at Stamford on p.559 of Pigot's Directory, 1828-29.
He was alive in 1834 when his father-in-law Charles Fairchild made his will.

John probably dies pre-1841:
John probably died pre-1841 since not found with wife in census.
Ann would be "Anne Day", age 60, born outside Middlesex, listed in 1841 census with her son Charles in Westminster, London.
John is listed as "stone mason" (would be deceased) on dau Sarah's mar cert and death cert.

Ann probably dies 1849:
She is probably Ann Day who died at Cambridge (her dau Frances lived at Cambridge) in 1849, age 69 (born 1780).
John and Ann had issue:

  1. Frances Day,
    bapt 14 Aug 1803, St.Botolph's church, Cambridge, NOT 1804.
    After grandmother.
She mar Daniel Barwell and had issue.
    They emigrated to Australia.

  2. Mary Ann Day,
    bapt 25 Nov 1804, St.Botolph's church, Cambridge.
She might be Mary Ann Day, bur St Clements, Cambridge, 1895, age 84 (born 1811).

  3. Martha Day,
    bapt 22 June 1806, St.Botolph's church, Cambridge.

  4. Charles Day,
    born Cambridge,
    bapt 15 Jan 1809, St.Botolph's church, Cambridge.
    After grandfather.

  5. Elizabeth Day,
    bapt 5 Apr 1811, St.John's church, Stamford.
She is probably the Elizabeth Day who was bur 19 Oct 1815 at Stamford, age given as 5.

  6. Caroline Day,
    bapt 25 Mar 1813, St.John's church, Stamford.

  7. Charlotte Day,
    bapt 14 Aug 1815, St.John's church, Stamford.
    She died 29 Feb 1816.

  8. Sarah Day,
    born 31 Oct 1817.
[Birthday book] says she was born 31 Oct, and baptism shows this would be 1817.
She was bapt 1 Nov 1817, St.John's church, Stamford.
NOT born 1821: Her age given at marriage and death would suggest born 1821, but that is clearly inaccurate. No 1821 baptism is found in Stamford.
There is a Sarah Ann Day, baptised in 1821 at Grantham (20 miles from Stamford), dau of John and Ann Day. This cannot be her. The father is a "labourer". This John was a stone mason. The family live in Grantham. This couple lived in Stamford before and after 1821.
Note also that no record says this Sarah was "Sarah Ann". Her baptism and marriage and death notice and grave just say "Sarah".

She emigrated 1852 to Australia. She went on the same ship as her sister Frances and brother-in-law Daniel Barwell.
See passenger record of the "Dominion", sailed from Plymouth 28 June 1852, to Portland, Victoria. From here.
She mar 28 Feb 1854 [her age 36] to Adam Marshall and had issue.
It was said they met on board ship to Australia, but I cannot see him in the passenger list of her ship in 1852.
They mar in Collingwood, Melbourne, Australia. See mar cert.

  9. Alfred Day,
    bapt 12 Aug 1819, St.John's church, Stamford.
It was thought he was born 1824, but that came from age given at death, which could be inaccurate. No 1824 baptism is found in Stamford.
Listed as staying with brother Charles Day in Westminster, London, in 1841 census. He is unmarried.
He mar 26 Feb 1849, St.Paul's, Cambridge, to Sarah Ann Linton [or Sarah, or Lenton].
They are listed in 1851 census at Coddenham, Suffolk. He is "stone mason".
    They emigrated to Australia.
    He died 1883, Victoria, Australia.
Death record says mother is Fairchild.
    They had issue.

  10. Ann Day,
    bapt 11 Apr 1822, St.John's church, Stamford.
    She died 27 Apr 1822.

Extract from will of Sarah Hotchkin dated 1826.
She leaves money to her niece Ann Fairchild who married John Day in Stamford in 1802.
She lists her as "Ann the wife of John Day of [Stamford] Stone Mason".

Proof the parents of Charles Day are John Day and Ann Fairchild of Cambridge

First we prove the parents of Charles Day are John Day and Ann Fairchild of Cambridge.

We consider it proven that the parents of Charles Day are John Day and Ann Fairchild of Cambridge.

Proof this is John Day and Ann Fairchild of Stamford

How do we know John Day and Ann Fairchild of Cambridge are the same as John Day who married Ann Fairchild in Stamford?

We consider it proven that John Day and Ann Fairchild of Cambridge are the same as John Day and Ann Fairchild of Stamford. And these children (Alfred, Charles, Sarah, Frances) are all siblings.
They married in Stamford, Ann's home town (and maybe John's too). He was a stone mason, and in that job you would travel to where the work was. They presumably moved to Cambridge for him for work on one of the regular building projects there. They later moved (or returned) to Stamford.
