Ballymaloe Castle, E of Cloyne, Co.Cork.
Came into possession of
Sir John Fitzedmund Fitzgerald
apparently in 1575.
It was his country seat. Cloyne was his town house.
Sir John lived to a great age, and his son
Sir Edmund Fitzgerald
also lived with him at Ballymaloe, with his wife and family.
Alterations were made by them, probably in the peace of 1603 to 1612.
This early 17th century house does not survive.
Both father and son died in 1612.
The castle was seat of Edmund's son
Sir John Óg Fitzgerald
(died 1640).
The Fitzgerald family lost
Ballymaloe Castle by 1650,
in the
Irish Confederate Wars
and the
Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.
Ballymaloe Castle
became the property of
Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery
in 1657.
The castle
later
had many different owners.
A later
Ballymaloe House
was built.
"Queen Anne wing" added c.1709.
Part of the old castle (called "the turret")
survives today.
Ballymaloe House
was bought by Irish chef
Myrtle Allen
and her husband in 1948.
They
founded a famous restaurant there
in 1964.
They also set up a hotel.
The house is now

Their daughter-in-law
Darina Allen
set up

a few miles to the E
(at Shanagarry, see map).

to the E of the main building, in the stable yard.
Some think this dates to the original 15th-16th century castle,
others that it is later.
