Maynooth Castle, Co.Kildare

W end of Main St, Maynooth, Co.Kildare.
Three blocks survive, just outside the gate of NUI Maynooth.

Maynooth Castle was built 1203, probably by 1st Baron of Offaly.
Seat of the Barons of Offaly.
Seat of the Earls of Kildare.
Enlarged and rebuilt by 6th Earl of Kildare 1426.
A College was established nearby by the 9th Earl of Kildare 1521.
Maynooth Castle was taken over by the Crown in 1535 after Silken Thomas' rebellion.
Restored to 11th Earl of Kildare 1552.
Restored under the 16th Earl of Kildare after 1630.
Ruined in the Irish Confederate Wars of 1641-53.
Abandoned by 16th Earl, probably about 1656.
