Michael Francis Doyle,
born July 12, 1875 in Philadelphia.
Irish-American.
He took a law degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1897.
He was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar.
He was an international lawyer.
A prominent
Democrat.
Very wealthy.
Secretary to
William Jennings Bryan,
presumably when the latter was US Secretary of State 1913-1915.
He represented Irish nationalists in America.
He helped get
Eamon de Valera
saved from execution after the 1916 Rising,
by presenting the evidence that De Valera was an American citizen.
He came from America to assist in the defence of
Roger Casement
in his trial for treason in
1916.
He was also counsel in a libel case for Casement's friend
Thomas St.John Gaffney.
He
mar 28 Nov 1917 to
Nancy O'Donoghue [born 18 May 1883]. No issue.
American counsel for Irish Republican Movement, 1921.
He was a friend of
George Bernard Shaw
and
John McCormack.
Candidate for
Presidential Elector
for Pennsylvania in 1928 and 1932.
A devout Catholic.
He was made a
Knight of the Holy Sepulchre (KGCHS).
He left about £40,000
to repair the roof of the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre
in Jerusalem.
