Gibbon of Stonehaven, Kincardineshire
There was a
Gibbon family of
Stonehaven, Kincardineshire
(S of Aberdeen, now in Aberdeenshire Council Area).
They may be related to our family, but proof is needed.
-
[Johnston, 1894]
describes our family and the Stonehaven family as two different families.
See p.176.
-
Beryl Mitchell
thinks Gibbon of Stonehaven are related to our family:
"There had been Gibbons, all relations,
in Aberdeen and its surrounds,
also Stonehaven since the 17th Century."
-
[Wyllie, 2020]
is the history of Gibbon of Stonehaven (ancestors of Sally Wyllie).
They also cover our family, though they say there is no proof of connection:
- From Prologue:
"We have also included the Gibbons who lived in Aberdeen who originally came from the west of
Aberdeen, around Echt. Probably the miller Gibbons made a similar journey, but south-eastwards, to
Kincardineshire. The two sets of Gibbons intermingled, going to the same churches, intermarrying,
acting as witnesses for each other at christenings and marriages, and being buried in the same
graveyards. There are still many Gibbons to the west of Aberdeen, but these would need a separate
study."
-
From Ch.22:
"Although this account deals chiefly with the 'Stonehaven' Gibbons, we must also include the 'Aberdeen'
Gibbons as the two branches are almost certainly related. Both strands probably came from the area to
the west of Aberdeen. They attended the same churches and both groups were heavily involved in the
shipping industry, either as merchants, ship builders or ship captains.
In addition to joint ventures there were several intermarriages."
