James Hourigan, of Annagh

 

James Hourigan listed as a butcher in Limerick in [Slater's Directory, 1856].


  
James Hourigan,
bapt 22 Apr 1823.
He lived in Annagh.

He mar 1stly, 30 Jan 1849, Limerick city, to Mary Anne O'Neill [from Limerick city].
He left Annagh and was a butcher in Limerick city. Living Limerick city at least 1851-1856.
Children bapt 1851-1854 in Limerick city.
John Hourigan says: "The Annagh House was closed for 3 years, and James the Butcher lived in Limerick."
"James Houragan" is listed as a butcher on Charlotte Quay, Limerick, in [Slater's Directory, 1856, p.306].
Mary Anne died 1854-1857.
James had among other issue by 1st wife:


  1. Mary Hourigan,
    Mary Josephine Hourigan,
    born 25 Mar 1851.
    Findagrave says born 25 Mar 1854, but baptism shows the year is wrong. 1900 census says born Mar 1854, but note it also says her husband was born Mar 1854. Seems clear she was born 25 Mar 1851.
    She was bapt 28 Mar 1851, St.John's Cathedral, Limerick city. See entry from here.
    She emigrated to America 1873.
    She mar 27 Nov 1877, Ohio, to Patrick Devereaux and had issue.


James wanted to return from Limerick to Annagh.
John Hourigan says: "He approached the Landlord Barrington and asked him for the place back and Barrington told him to fix that with the Humphries family which he did and reared all his family there."

He mar 2ndly, 16 Feb 1857, Murroe, to Catherine Ryan Gardiner [born 1829 or 1838].
They lived in the "Boreen" house at Annagh.
James and Catherine are listed in 1901 census at Annagh. He and his son Patt are farmers. House no.17.
Catherine died 6 June 1903, Annagh.

James is listed as widower, farmer, at death.
He died at Annagh, 28 Jan 1908, age 85 yrs.
