Lyon

William Charles Lyon was born 1862, many years before his "parents" Hugh Playfair Lyon and Lavinia Cornwell married in 1873.
Tim Lyon explains that William was the natural son of Lavinia Cornwell. Natural father unknown, but not Hugh Playfair Lyon.
DNA testing suggests the father was an Eastern European Jew.

Rev. Charles Jopson Lyon,
born 1789.
Male-line descendant of Rev. William Lyon (born 1675, see here), who was male-line descendant of Patrick Lyon, 1st Lord Glamis, son of Sir John Lyon of Glamis, who was grandson of Robert II, King of Scotland.
Rev. Charles also descends through Ogilvy and Graham and Douglas from Robert III, King of Scotland.
Rev. Charles was 1st cousin (through Lyon) of photography pioneer Hugh Lyon Playfair.

Rev. Charles mar 2ndly, 1831, to Margaret Playfair.
Minister of the Episcopal Chapel, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland.
Had issue by 2nd wife:

  1. Hugh Playfair Lyon,
    born 1835, Scotland.
Descendant of Robert III, King of Scotland.
2nd cousin (through Lyon) of Lyon Playfair, 1st Baron Playfair.
    Grew up St.Andrews.
    Civil Engineer.
Apparently had a relationship in London in 1860s with Lavinia Cornwell and had a daughter (see below). He clearly supported her and later married her.
He is listed as unmarried in 1871 census (see p.1 and p.2), living at Hartford House, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, with his sister Margaret Lyon and her husband Rev. Thomas Lee, who ran a school there.
Living 10 Milner St, Chelsea, London, at mar 1873, listed as bachelor.

He mar 10 Apr 1873 [St Luke's CoE church, Chelsea] to Lavinia Cornwell.
She was born in Great Baddow, Chelmsford, Essex, dau of William Cornwell.
She was bapt 7 Nov 1841, Great Baddow.
She is listed in 1861 census (see p.1 and p.2) as lodger at 3 New St, St.John's Wood, London (now Newcourt St, see map).
She gave birth to a natural son William in 1862 and a natural dau Florence in 1864.
William's father is unknown. It is thought that Florence was Hugh Lyon's child.

At son William's birth in 1862 she is living 3 North St, Marylebone, London (now Aybrook St, see map).
At dau Florence's birth in 1864 she is living 78 Camden Street, Camden Town, London (see map).
She is listed as spinster at mar 1873, living St.Luke's, Shepherd's Bush, London.
Tim Lyon says: "I am pretty sure that Hugh Playfair Lyon was the father [of Florence] and that he supported the family, eventually marrying Lavinia to legitimise the children when he realised that he was dying of TB."

Hugh and Lavinia lived 42 Devonport Road, Shepherd's Bush, London.
He died 28 Apr 1876, age 41 yrs.
Will pr 27 June 1876. See probate.
Lavinia is listed in 1881 census as widow, living 81 Gower St, London. She is "Boarding House Keeper".
Lavinia is widow, living with son William in 1891 and 1901 census.
She is listed as of Glenogle St, St. Austell, Cornwall, at death.
She died 9 Sept 1908, King's End Ave, Ruislip, Middlesex, age 66 yrs.
See probate granted 14 Oct 1908 to her son William.

Lavinia had issue by unknown father [DNA testing suggests he was an Eastern European Jew]:

    1. William Charles Lyon,
William Charles Playfair Lyon, natural child.
He was born 4 Sept 1862, 3 North St, Marylebone, London. See birth cert in [GRO.UK].
Later census entries say born St.John's Wood, but this is not correct. Marylebone is not far away (see map).
On birth cert, he is William Charles, son of "Charles Cornwell", a "Commercial Traveller", and "Lavinia Cornwell formerly Knight". This is all fiction. Lavinia was not married. Knight is her mother's maiden name.
This birth cert must be birth of William Charles Cornwell, [GRO.UK], Marylebone, 4th qr 1862, 1a 467.
(todo) See birth of William Charles Knight, [GRO.UK], Marylebone, 4th qr 1862, 1a 398.
(todo) See bapt of William Charles Knight (born 5 Oct 1862) on 10 Nov 1863, parish of Saint Thomas, Portman Square, St Marylebone. Father given as "Alfred Knight", mother "Sabrin". Original parish records are in [LMA] GB 0074 P89/TMS.

Lavinia had issue probably by Hugh:

    1. Florence Lyon,
      Florence Lavinia Lyon, natural child.
She was born 22 Oct 1864, 78 Camden Street, Camden Town, London. See birth cert in [GRO.UK].
On birth cert, she is Florence Lavinia, dau of "Hugh Cornwell", a "Civil Engineer", and "Lavinia Cornwell formerly Knight". This is fiction. Lavinia was not married.
The father's name given as "Hugh", and him being an engineer, indicates clearly that the father is Hugh Lyon.
