My ancestors - Yielding - Contents

Glensharrold, Co.Limerick

And Glenastar Lodge, Co.Limerick.

The Yielding/Yeilding family had an estate in and around Glensharrold, NW and W of Ardagh, W Co.Limerick.
A little further away to the S would be Newcastle West and to the N would be Shanagolden.
Four civil parishes meet at this location in a complex geography.
There are two Glensharrold townlands, neighbours of each other: The family had property in both of the Glensharrold townlands.
There are two houses in the area:

Richard Yeilding (or Yielding) seems to be the first one here. He is known to have had land at Glensharrold.
He would be "Richard Yeilding" who had a lease dated 15 Jan 1757 of land in or near Glensharrold.
He did not live there. He lived at Rathkeale and later at Belview.
He died 1770.
His widow lived at Rathkeale.

His son was William Yielding (or Yeilding), who would have inherited Glensharrold.
[Burkes Irish, 1976] shows Ann Massy, born 1750, married to Hugh Yielding (unidentified) of "Glenaster", Co.Limerick.
This is probably confusion with her sister Mary Agnes Massy who married William Yielding.
William did not live at Glensharrold either. It may just be land and no house at this point.
He died before 1803.

His son was Richard Massy Yeilding. He inherited the Glensharrold estate.
His main house was elsewhere, but he clearly had a country house at Glensharrold, since two of his sons named their houses in North America after Glensharrold.
NIAH says Glenastar Lodge was a hunting/fishing lodge, built c.1800 by the Yeilding family, "probably Richard Massy Yeilding".
"George Yielding" (unidentified) is listed in [Leet's Directory, 1814, p.201] at "Glen-sharril" (Glensharrold).
Richard Massy Yeilding died 1834.

His son was William Richard Yeilding.
He is listed in [Tithe Survey, 1830] as owning land in Glensharrold, Kilcolman par.
He is listed in [Tithe Survey, 1833] as holding most of the townland of Glensharrold, Rathronan par.
He lived elsewhere. He came to live at Glenastar some time after 1844.
Family is living at Glenastar Lodge in 1849.
Landed Estates says he held Glenastar Lodge at the beginning of the 1850s.
He sold the Glensharrold estate in 1853 but held onto Glenastar Lodge.
He was living "Glenastar, Newcastle" as at death in 1854. Think this means Glenastar Lodge.
His daughter died 1872 at Glenastar Lodge.
His widow died 1881 at Glenastar Lodge.
His descendant Richard Birkett Yeilding died 1964 at Glenastar Lodge.

Glenastar Lodge was derelict for some years.
It was sold in 1973 and then restored.
Sold again in 2020.
It is now a holiday house available to rent.

Extract from MASSY in [Burkes Irish, 1976, pp.788-791].
This shows Ann Massy, born 1750, married to Hugh Yielding (unidentified) of "Glenaster", Co.Limerick.
This is probably confusion with her sister Mary Agnes Massy who married William Yielding (or Yeilding) who would have inherited the Glensharrold estate.

Extract from [Leet's Directory, 1814, p.201].
George Yielding (unidentified) is at "Glen-sharril" (Glensharrold), nearest post town Shanagolden. This may be Glenastar Lodge.
Samuel Upton is at "Glenster" (Glenastar House), nearest post town Newcastle West.

Glenastar House (probably irrelevant)

Glenastar House in Glenastar townland seems to be irrelevant to the Yielding/Yeilding history.
Samuel Upton is at Glenastar House in [Leet's Directory, 1814].
J.U. Upton is listed at Glenastar House in [Lewis, 1837].
No evidence Yielding/Yeilding ever lived here.
