George Cashel, of Bedford House, Co.Kerry

George Cashel,
or Cashell.
Probably born 1817 and was educ TCD.
His father owned Shallee House, Co.Tipperary, but lived in Co.Kerry most of his life.
In around 1830s-1840s his father lived at Bedford House, near Listowel, Co.Kerry.
At mar 1840 he is listed as George Cashel, eldest son of George Cashel, of Bedford House.

He mar 15 Feb 1840 to Jane Anne Franklin.
See Jane Anne Franklin in tree by Kathleen Wicks.
She was dau of Capt. John Franklin, 90th Regiment, of Greenhills, Co.Limerick. Greenhills is just S of Lemonfield, near Kilpeacon, Knocknagaul par (just S of Limerick), Co.Limerick.
Jane Anne was as at 1840 the widow of Richard Sherlock, 62nd Regiment (will pr 1839).
George and Jane Anne mar at Limerick CoI cathedral. See [Limerick Standard, 18 Feb 1840]. See [unknown Nenagh newspaper, 22 Feb 1840].
See notice in unknown Limerick newspaper, apparently 15 Feb 1840, from Mark Russell's family tree.

He is listed as George Cashel the younger, of Bedford, in his sister's marriage settlement, 30 Apr 1840.
He and his wife lived at least 1843-1849 at Roseland Cottage (or Rose Land), Grogeen townland, just SE of Listowel, Co.Kerry.
Listed as of "Rose Land" under Listowel in [Slater's Directory, 1846].

They moved to the area of Ballybunion, Co.Kerry, a bit NW of Listowel.
At dau's birth 1851 they are living at Ballyduff and the child is baptised at Killehenney CoI church (or Killehenny, this is Ballybunion). Ballyduff, Rattoo par, is a little S of Ballybunion. Rattoo civil parish borders Killehenny civil parish.
It is possible this is an error for Barraduff. It is hard to tell. Ballyduff is plausible too.
There is a "George Cashel" listed in [Griffiths Valuation, 1852] at Glanerdalliv, Rattoo par, S of Ballyduff. Renting from Wilson Gun.

George is listed in [Griffiths Valuation] 1851 or 1852 as of Barraduff, Lisselton par, a little E of Ballybunion. Lisselton civil parish borders Killehenny civil parish.
Listed at "Ballybunion" at children's baptisms 1852-1856.
Listed as of "Barraduff Cottage" in newspaper notice of daughter's birth 1854. Listed at "Ballybunion" at her baptism. So "Ballybunion" seems to be shorthand for places near Ballybunion.

His father died 1855.
He inherited Shallee House, Co.Tipperary.
George Cashel, of Shallee, is listed in [Slater's Directory, 1856].

Emigration to New Zealand, 1856-1866:
George and the family emigrated to New Zealand. Though his son George stayed in Ireland and lived in Shallee House.
The Southern Cross, 6 January 1866, shows the arrival at Auckland, New Zealand, of "Jane Ann, Richard, Grace and Elizabeth Cashel".
He must be George Cashel who is listed in an ad in the Daily Southern Cross, 1 February 1869, Page 2. He is proprietor of Tookey's Flat, Graham's Town, New Zealand, and renting out a property at Ohinemuri.
George Cashel is listed in Daily Southern Cross, 13 February 1869, Page 8, as proprietor of Belmont, Ohinemuri, New Zealand.
George Cashel is listed at Belmont, Ohinemuri, during floods described in Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle, 24 February 1869, Page 3.
