George Cashel, of Bedford House, Co.Kerry

Two death notices (details below) for George Cashel show he is born 1780, inherited Shallee House, Co.Tipperary (but mostly lived in Co.Kerry), married Grace Wilson, died 1855.

George Cashel,
or Cashell, born 1780.
See entry on Mark Russell's family tree.
His father owned Shallee House, Co.Tipperary, but lived in Co.Kerry.
After his father's death in 1801-1802, he inherited Shallee, and rented it out (to the Young family) for decades, while he lived in Co.Kerry.
He might be George Cashel of Tralee who is referred to in [Rowan, 1860] as being an admirer around 1805 of Sarah Isdell, governess to the family of Sir Edward Denny, 3rd Baronet. This George Cashel was then living at a corner house near the gate of Tralee Castle.
In marriage settlement he is listed as George Cashell (or Cashel) of Tralee, eldest son of the late George Cashell.
In marriage notice he is described as of "Ursa" (unidentified), Co.Kerry.

He mar 16 June 1806 to Grace Wilson.
She was dau of John Wilson (died 1796), a wealthy merchant of Paisley, Scotland, and his wife Margaret Sym [or Syme].
She was sister of Prof. John Wilson of Edinburgh (born 1785, died 1854).
They married near Edinburgh. See marriage notice in Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 23 June 1806.
Marriage settlement dated 14 June 1806, with a further post-marriage settlement dated 14 July 1806. (Not a typo, two documents.)
Marriage settlement refers to property in Co.Kerry and Co.Tipperary, including "Shally", Co.Tipperary.

His brother Rowan killed a friend in a duel on 7 Aug 1815.
George and other relatives of Rowan were involved in political intrigue in 1815-1816 to try to secure Rowan's acquittal.
George registered a batch of freeholders as part of the plan to help his brother. Think it is Fuller who refers to "Registry" (of voters), 20 Aug 1815 and 11 Oct 1815. Think this was burnt in 1922. No register of Co.Kerry voters from this time seems to survive.

Apparently lived in Killarney area in 1816-1824:
Lived in 1816-1817 at Lakeville, near Killarney (a house also linked to Blennerhassett).
George Cashel of Lakeville (eldest son of the late George Cashel), is party to [Deed, 1817] with Francis Young of Shallee, Co.Tipperary. (He is renting Shallee to Francis Young.)
He must be George Cashell of Killarney (son of the late George Cashell) who is party to [Deed, 1820]

He is probably "G. Cashel" who wrote in 1822 to Dublin Castle from Killarney.
In letter of 5 Mar 1822 he reported an attack by Whiteboys on the home of a tithe collector called Batt Buckley, of Curra, Glanbehy par, Co.Kerry. Buckley was collecting tithes for Rev. Barry Denny. On 1 Mar 1822, Whiteboys attacked his house. Buckley shot the raiders, but they managed to burn his house. Cashel appeals to Dublin Castle for Buckley who has nowhere to live.
In letter of 24 Mar 1822 he thanks Dublin Castle for sending £25 to give to Buckley.

Listed as JP for Co.Kerry at his death.
He is probably George Cashel, J.P., New St, Killarney, listed on p.273 of [Pigot's Directory, 1824].

"George Cashell" is listed in House of Commons Parliamentary papers, Volume 35, 1832, as one of the Magistrates in the Commission of the Peace in Co.Kerry.
Lived at Tivoli Terrace, Cork in 1835-1836.

Grace dies, 1835:
Grace died 20 Feb 1835 at Tivoli Terrace, Cork.
See Limerick Chronicle, 25 Feb 1835 and Belfast Newsletter, 6 Mar 1835.
George is living Tivoli Terrace, Cork, as at his dau's insanity in 1835-1836.

He lived at Bedford House, Galey par, just N of Listowel, Co.Kerry.
"George Cashel" of Listowel is invested with new Commission as magistrate for Co.Kerry in 1838 [Limerick Standard, 12 June 1838].
Listed as of Bedford, Co.Kerry in his daughter's marriage settlement, 1839.
Listed at Bedford in his daughter's marriage settlement, 1840. Note she married at Listowel (near Bedford).
"George Cashell" of Listowel is listed as magistrate in [Pettigrew and Oulton's Directory, 1846].

George dies, 1855:
It seems he was finally living at Shallee at his death.
He died shortly before 7 July 1855, "at his residence, Shallee House, Co.Tipperary", age 75 yrs.
See notice in Kerry Evening Post, Sat 7 July 1855, p.3.
See notice in Cork Examiner, 20 July 1855, p.3. Notes he is of Shallee, and is brother-in-law of Prof. Wilson.
His will pr 1855. See entry in index. Prerogative Court. And entry in other index. Will burnt in 1922.
George and Grace had issue:

  1. George Cashel,
    eldest son,
    of Bedford House, Co.Kerry.
Would be after father and grandfather.
    Inherited Shallee House.

  2. John Wilson Cashel,
    2nd son, born 1819.
    Would be after grandfather.
He died 23 Jan 1838, Abbey Street, Dublin, age 19.
He died after a silly accident while balancing on a chair.
See Kerry Evening Post, 27 January 1838.
See [Limerick Standard, 30 Jan 1838].
See Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 5 February 1838.
He was bur Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. See grave transcript and photo.

  1. Janet Cashel,
    eldest dau.
She mar May 1840 to George Purdon Bevan.
He was descendant of Cashell of Bushfield, Co.Tipperary. So they would be cousins of some sort.
They mar at Listowel church, by the Rev. Dawson Massy. See [Limerick Standard, 18 May 1840].
Think did NOT mar at Camas, Co.Limerick.
Marriage settlement in deed of 30 Apr 1840.

  2. Margaret Cashel.
    Would be after grandmother.
She suffered from insanity starting in Sept 1835. She was suicidal.
She was put in a lunatic asylum.
A friend of hers complained this was done to her, and there was a controversy about it. See CSORP file.

  3. Ellen Cashel.
    Would be after grandmother.
She mar Patrick Cheevers [of Listowel].
Marriage settlement in deed of 23 Oct 1839.
Patrick is party to her sister's marriage settlement, 1840.

Looks like George the younger was born 1817 and went to Trinity College Dublin.
The above is probably the same as:

George Cashel,
"generosus" (gentleman),
had issue:

  1. George Cashel,
    born 1817, Co.Kerry.
He was educ at school by Private Tutor.
He was educ TCD. He went up 6 July 1835, age 18. Listed as "Pensioner" (i.e. paid normal fees, from family of middling means). See [TCD Alumni].

Think this might be a 2nd marriage for George Cashel after his wife died.
It could also be his son, but would seem very young, only just gone up to TCD. Also Susanna would have to die early since he married Jane Anne Franklin in 1840.

George Cashel,
of Tivoli Terrace, Cork.
He mar 1836 to Susanna Lawrence [dau of Samuel Lawrence of Silvermines, Co.Tipperary].
See notice in Limerick Chronicle, 23 April 1836.
Marriage to "Susanna Going Laurence" in 1836 recorded in [Diocese of Cork and Ross].
Note there is later an 1883 deed linking the Going family to this family, Cashel of Shallee, Co.Tipperary.

Notice by George and his brothers in response to the O'Connor pamphlet of 1816 about the Rowan Cashel duel.
From The General Advertiser, or Limerick Gazette, 8 Oct 1816.
Though Nick Reddan thinks it is the issue of 3 October 1816.
The notice is issued from Lakeville, near Killarney.

Letter from George Cashel about his daughter's insanity, 13 Dec 1835.
See p.1 and p.2.
See another letter from him, dated 3 Jan 1836.
From CSORP file.

Bedford House, N of Listowel, Co.Kerry, on 1887 to 1913 map.
By 1871, Bedford House was the home of Fitzmaurice.
The dramatist George Fitzmaurice was born there in 1877.
