Sir Thomas Hay (and here),
of Erroll, Perthshire.
He mar (charter 1372) to Elizabeth Stuart [dau of Robert II, King of Scotland and descendant of Henry I].
They had issue:

   He mar Beatrice Douglas [descendant of Robert II, King of Scotland and of Henry I].
   He died 1462.

The rebel Earl of Erroll

The 1st Earl of Erroll was the ancestor of:

• Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, born 1564.
  He succ 1585. Converted to Catholicism.
  He was a rebel in 1589-1597 against both James VI, King of Scotland and Elizabeth I of England.
  His seat, Old Slains Castle, Aberdeenshire, was razed to the ground during his rebellion in 1594.
  He abjured Catholicism in 1597 and made peace with the authorities. He escaped execution.
  He built the New Slains Castle close to the old castle in 1597.
  He died 1631.

Boyd becomes Earl of Erroll

John Hay, 12th Earl of Erroll, died 1704,
was grandfather of:

1. Anne Livingston.
   She mar 1724 to William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock and had issue.
   Their son James Boyd became 15th Earl of Erroll in 1758 and changed surname to Hay.

Marquess of Tweeddale

Hay, Marquess of Tweeddale, are "probably" related to Hay, Earl of Erroll, above.
Of this family is:

• John Hay, 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale,
  born 1645,
  died 1713,
  had issue:
  1. Lord John Hay,
     born c.1668.
     He became a captain in 1689.
     He mar 1stly to Elizabeth Dalzell [dau of James Dalzell, 3rd Earl of Carnwath, NOT Mary, NOT dau of 4th Earl].
     He was a Brigadier General under Marlborough in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
     He commanded the famous regiment of dragoons, afterwards called the Scots Greys. He founded their reputation.
     He fought under Marlborough at the Battle of Schellenberg, Bavaria, 2 July 1704, and the Battle of Blenheim, Bavaria, 13 Aug 1704.
     He mar 2ndly, 1705, to Elizabeth Orby. No issue.
     He fought under Marlborough at the Battle of Ramillies, Belgium, 23 May 1706.
     He took part in the Siege of Menen, West Flanders (NW Belgium, on French border) in Aug 1706.
     He died of fever at Courtrai, West Flanders (near Menen), on 25 Aug 1706 [Burkes Peerage], or 15 Aug [DNB], age c.38 yrs.
