Reginald Herbert, 15th Earl of Pembroke,
Wilton House was a major military HQ in WW2:
In 1940, in WW2,
Wilton House was requistioned for use as the HQ of
Southern Command
(all of SW England,
see history).
The Double Cube room was the operations room where
Churchill and
Eisenhower
planned the Allied invasion of Europe in 1944.
The family got Wilton House back in 1949.
15th Earl
died 13 Jan 1960, age 79 yrs.
Beatrice died 1973.
Memorial to both of them
in Wilton parish church.
