Wilton new parish church

Church of St Mary and St Nicholas, the new (1845) parish church of Wilton, Wiltshire.
Burial place of and location of monuments to the Earls of Pembroke.
Near Wilton House.
See street view.

The old Wilton parish church was St Mary's Church, in the Market Place, Wilton.
The Earls of Pembroke were buried here before the new church was built.

9th Earl of Pembroke was buried at Wilton in 1750.
His wife Mary Fitzwilliam was buried at Wilton in 1769.
The 11th Earl's 1st wife Elizabeth Beauclerk was buried at Wilton in 1793.
10th Earl was buried at Wilton in 1794.
11th Earl was buried at Wilton in 1827.

A spectacular new parish church, the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas, was built in 1845 at a different site.
The new church was built by the 11th Earl's widow Catherine Woronzow and her son Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea.
There were in fact a number of old churches in Wilton. The new church was built on the site of the former church of St. Nicholas.
Monuments were moved from the old parish church to the new parish church.
The above would presumably remain buried at the site of the old church. Unless they were in coffins that could be moved to the crypt of the new church.

The 11th Earl's 2nd wife Catherine Woronzow was buried at the new Wilton church in 1856.
Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea was buried here in 1861.
The churchyard was closed for burials in 1889. See findagrave.
There is a new cemetery on the Shaftesbury road to the W of the town. See findagrave.

WSHC 2057/F1/18 has photographs of the crypt of Wilton church. Date 1980.

Tomb of 9th Earl

Tomb of the 9th Earl of Pembroke (died 1750). See findagrave.
Formerly on this tomb was a bust of the 9th Earl by Roubillac, made around the time of his death in 1750.
The bust was sold c.1999 to establish a trust for church maintenance. A copy of the bust is now on his tomb.

WSHC 2057/H3/18a is an architectural drawing, date c.1750, showing the plan of the E end of the old St. Mary's Church, Wilton, with the monument to the 9th Earl of Pembroke. The entry says that apart from the bust, "the rest of the monument has not survived". And indeed the drawings seem to show a different monument to the current monument.
