Michael Cullen, or Michael Culhane,
born 10 Nov 1816,
of Castletown, Co.Limerick (not far W of Harding Grove and Bruree, see map).
originally "Culhane", sometimes Culihane, or Cullihane,
later (in America) spelt "Cullen",

He mar, settlement 1838, to Sarah Harding [born 1818].
They went to live (before 1847) at Gortagullane, Ballymacelligott par, near Tralee, Co.Kerry.
Children were bapt in Ballymacelligott parish 1847-55, surname spelt "Culhane", he is listed as "farmer".
He is "Michael Culhane" who is listed in [Griffiths Valuation, 1853] as renting at Gortagullane and at Cahermore, both in Ballymacelligott par, Co.Kerry. He is renting both from Charles Blennerhassett of Ballyseedy.

Emigrated to America, 1866:
They emigrated with their children to the U.S. (through New York) in 1866.
They settled at Salem, New Hampshire.
In America the name became "Cullen".
Sarah died Salem, 1 Feb 1894, age 76 yrs, bur Salem.

Michael died Salem, 3 Nov 1898, age 81 yrs, bur Salem.
See death record. Lists him as "Cullen", "farmer".
Michael and Sarah had issue:


  1. Sarah Grace Cullen, born Dec 1840,
    mar Charles McCarthy.

  2. Annie Harding Cullen, born c.1842.

  3. Michael Cullen, born 8 July 1844,
    mar and had issue.

  4. Maria Isabella Cullen, born 31 Mar 1846,
    mar Thomas Henry Knox and had issue,
    ancestor of:

  5. Fannie Cullen,
    Frances, Emma Fannie Poff Cullen, "Fannie" on grave,
    born Feb 1847 (a month old at bapt),
    bapt "Fanny Culhane", 24 Mar 1847 [Ballymacelligott and Ballyseedy CoI par records].
    Went to America with parents 1866.
    She mar 31 May 1866 to George Hoffman [born 1832, Co.Kerry].
    He is of the Hoffman family found in [Griffiths Valuation, 1853] beside Michael Culhane in Gortagullane and Cahermore, in Ballymacelligott par, Co.Kerry.
    He emigrated to USA in 1866.
    They mar in Nashua, New Hampshire.

    They lived Hudson, New Hampshire, as at 1867-1873.
    Fannie died in childbirth, Hudson, New Hampshire, 25 May 1873, age 26 years.
    She was bur Ford cemetery, Musquash Rd, Hudson, New Hampshire (see map). See her grave.
    After her death, George took the 3 children to California, Australia, and finally New Zealand.
    He sailed in 1876 from San Francisco, California, to Australia on the ship Granada. Lived for a while in Australia.
    Moved 1881 to New Zealand.
    He died 1916, Te Kuiti, New Zealand, age 84 yrs.
    He was buried in Te Kuiti Old Cemetery, Mangarino Road, Te Kuiti.
    See grave. His grave was restored with a new detailed inscription in 2013.
    Fannie and George had issue:

    1. John Onslow Hoffman,
      born 14 Feb 1867, Hudson, New Hampshire,
      died in 1961 in Rotorua, New Zealand, age 94 yrs,
      grandfather of:

      1. Tania Macdonald,
        researching family tree.

    2. William James Hoffman,
      born 6 July 1869, Hudson, New Hampshire,
      died 1958 in Te Kuiti, New Zealand, age 89 yrs.

    3. Sarah Hoffman,
      Sarah Jane, born 13 June 1871, Hudson, New Hampshire,
      died 1945 in Coburg, Melbourne, Australia, age 74 yrs.

    4. (son) Hoffman,
      died with mother at birth, 1873,
      bur with mother, Hudson, New Hampshire,
      see grave, just says "infant son" on grave (no name).


  6. William Culhane,
    born July 1850 (a month old at bapt),
    bapt 4 Aug 1850 [Ballymacelligott and Ballyseedy CoI par records].


  7. Eliza Culhane,
    born 29 December 1852,
    bapt 29 December 1852 [Ballymacelligott and Ballyseedy CoI par records].


  8. James Harding Cullen,
    born 18 October 1855,
    bapt "James Culhane", 12 November 1855 [Ballymacelligott and Ballyseedy CoI par records],
    mar Elizabeth Birmingham,
    ancestors of:

    1. Jim Cullen,
      of Texas,
      researching family tree.
