David Tuohy

David Tuohy's will was pr 1792.
Entry from here. Also here.

David Tuohy,
of Tralee.
See wikitree.
He would be David Tuohy, gent., of Tralee whose will was pr 1792, Diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe. Will would be burnt in 1922.
He is not party to dau's marriage settlement 1801. He is clearly dead.
He died before daughter's death in 1806.
He had issue:

  1. Elizabeth Tuohy,
    Betsey.
She is of parish of Tralee at mar.
She mar 15 Jan 1801 to her 1st cousin Rickard O'Connell and had issue.
They mar at Tralee CoI church. (Rickard was CoI.) See entry from here.
See marriage settlement, 15 Jan 1801.
See their marriage discussed in letter of 24 Jan 1801 on pp.40-41 (letter 38) of [Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell, vol 1].
[Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell, vol 1, p.46] has wrong name for her father.

  2. "Miss Tuohy".
    Tragic relationship:
After a relationship with a man, she was in deep depression late in 1806, and she died suddenly, possibly by suicide, in November 1806.
Ellen Fitzsimon tells the tragic story of 1806 about "Miss Tuohy". This story may be sanitised, and the real story may be darker. It may involve the man being married, and her getting pregnant.
    See Theory of O'Connell descent.
"Miss Tuohy" is not named by Ellen Fitzsimon or the newspaper reports of death, but the newspapers confirm she is daughter of David Tuohy.
    Death, 1806:
Miss Tuohy died suddenly on Sunday evening, 2 Nov 1806, at Newbridge, near Rathkeale, Co.Limerick.
Notice in Limerick Chronicle says she was on her way to Dublin. Ellen Fitzsimon says she was going from Kerry to Dublin with Mary and Daniel O'Connell.
See item in Limerick Gazette or General Advertiser, Tuesday 4 November 1806.

Kitty Tuohy

Either David or his brother John is father of the following Kitty Tuohy.
It is probably David, and Kitty is probably "Miss Tuohy" above.
This is not quite proved though.

  1. Kitty Tuohy.
    1st cousin of Mary O'Connell.
Kitty is mentioned as unmarried, and being teased about romantic possibilities, in a letter of 2 Apr 1806 from her cousin Mary O'Connell.

Letter mentioning Kitty Tuohy, Apr 1806

Letter from Mary O'Connell to her husband Daniel O'Connell, 2 Apr 1806.
Refers to Kitty Tuohy, a 1st cousin of Mary (i.e. a daughter of David or John).
Kitty is not Mary's sister Catherine O'Connell, since it says "her mother".
From p.150 (letter 165) of [Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell, vol 1].

Miss Tuohy

The tragic story of 1806 about a "Miss Tuohy".
This is told in p.1624, which is a collection of materials for a biography of Daniel O'Connell, by his daughter Ellen Fitzsimon. (She was eldest daughter of Mary and Daniel O'Connell, born 1805, died 1883.)
Ellen Fitzsimon says the following:

Notes: See discussion of this in Theory of O'Connell descent.

The story of Miss Tuohy.
From p.99 of p.1624.
See larger and full page.
Discovered by me in the NLI microfilm room on Wed 12 Nov 2025.

Miss Tuohy death in newspapers

The death of Miss Tuohy on Sun 2 Nov 1806.
From the Limerick Gazette or General Advertiser, Tuesday 4 November 1806.
This confirms she really did die suddenly.
It also shows she is the daughter of David Tuohy.

Abstract of notice in Limerick Chronicle, shortly after 2 Nov 1806.
From p.2439 of [O'Kief, vol.8].
This says she was on her way to Dublin.
Says she died at "New Bridge" (near Rathkeale).

Newbridge and Rathkeale on p.104 of [Taylor and Skinner, 1777].
N is to the bottom right.
Newbridge is in Ballyan townland, NW of Rathkeale.
Close to Riddlestown and Alta Villa.
See modern map and street view.

David Tuohy who married Hartnet

In Tralee RC parish records we can find the following David Tuohy family.
But it is not clear this is our family.
Surely a 14 year old is not being teased about getting married? And maybe having an affair and giving birth?
This family might not be relevant.
