He mar
Elizabeth Fitzmaurice [born 1725].
She is NOT Ellen.
O'CONNELL in
[Burkes Irish, 1976]
has her as
"Ellen" but this is wrong.
Edward's will 1785 says "Elizabeth".
And her grand-daughter's
marriage settlement, 1801,
says "Elizabeth".
[Cusack, 1872, p.780]
says she was of Lixnaw, SW of Listowel.
[O'Connell, vol.2, 1892]
says she was of "Cosfiely", Co.Kerry (unidentified).
Claims of Fitzmaurice ancestry:
-
[Cusack, 1872, p.780]
says: "The mother of the Liberator's wife was a Miss Fitzmaurice, of Lixnaw, of the
same family as the Marquis of Lansdowne."
She would mean the grandmother.
-
[O'Connell, vol.2, 1892]
says the Tuohy family story was that Elizabeth Fitzmaurice was said to be descended from
the disinherited 14th century "Blind Lord",
William FitzMaurice,
son of Nicholas FitzMaurice, 2nd Baron of Kerry and Lixnaw.
-
Basil O'Connell in
letter of 21 July 1969
seems to say Elizabeth Fitzmaurice might be
of the family of
Fitzmaurice of Duagh.
This family are
claimed to descend from
Fitzmaurice, Baron Kerry
(family of Marquis of Lansdowne).
-
In the family of
Fitzmaurice of Duagh
there is in fact an Elizabeth Fitzmaurice, born 1726,
dau of
Ulick Fitzmaurice
of Duagh and Tryphena Blennerhassett.
But there is no indication this could be our Elizabeth.
Edward dies, 1785:
His will dated 8 Aug 1785.
He
died at Tralee, shortly before 25 Aug 1785.
See Limerick Chronicle,
Thur 25 Aug 1785.
Will pr 1 Oct 1785.
Elizabeth is party to her grand-daughter's
marriage settlement, 15 Jan 1801.
Elizabeth dies, 1809:
She lived to see multiple great-grandchildren.
She died Sun 7 May 1809, Tralee, age 84 yrs.
See Limerick Chronicle,
Sat 13 May 1809.
They had issue:
-
David Tuohy, eldest son.
See wikitree.
He would be David Tuohy of Tralee whose will was pr 1792,
Diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe.
See entry
from here.
He is not party to dau's marriage settlement 1801. He is clearly dead.
He had issue:
- Elizabeth Tuohy,
Betsey.
She is of parish of Tralee at mar.
She mar 15 Jan 1801
to her 1st cousin
Rickard O'Connell
and had issue.
They mar at Tralee CoI church. (Rickard was CoI.)
See entry

See marriage settlement, 15 Jan 1801.
See their marriage discussed
in letter of 24 Jan 1801 on
pp.40-41 (letter 38) of
[Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell, vol 1].
[Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell, vol 1, p.46]
has wrong name for her father.
-
John Tuohy.
"Uncle Jack". Captain Tuohy.
Mentioned in
[O'Connell, vol.2, 1892].
One of the sons is father of:
-
Kitty Tuohy.
1st cousin of Mary O'Connell.
Kitty is mentioned as unmarried, and being teased about romantic possibilities,
in a
letter of 2 Apr 1806
from
her cousin
Mary O'Connell.
-
Ellen Tuohy,
Catholic, born 1752.
She mar 1stly, pre-1777, to
Thomas O'Connell, MD
and had issue.
Thomas was 2nd cousin of
Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 1st Baronet.
He died 1785, leaving her with small children.
She mar 2ndly, 31 Oct 1803 [her age 51] to
Henry Blennerhassett.
Henry was 1st cousin of
Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 1st Baronet.
Both Thomas and Henry being cousins of the 1st Baronet
may be significant.
See Theory of O'Connell descent.
- Mary Tuohy.
She mar pre-1785 to --- Chute.
She must be "Maria Tuohy"
and he must be Thomas Chute
who sp the bapt of Ellen's son in 1780.

Letter from
Mary O'Connell
to her husband
Daniel O'Connell, 2 Apr 1806.
Refers to
Kitty Tuohy, a 1st cousin of Mary
(i.e. a daughter of David or John).
Kitty is
not Mary's sister
Catherine O'Connell,
since it says
"her mother".
From p.150 (letter 165) of
[Correspondence of Daniel O'Connell, vol 1].
The following tragic story of 1806 about a "Miss Tuohy"
is told by
the daughter of Mary and Daniel O'Connell,
Ellen Fitzsimon.
(She was eldest daughter, born 1805, died 1883.)
It says the following:
- The following events happened in the latter part of 1806.
- "Miss Tuohy" was Mary O'Connell's
"first cousin and most intimate friend, an extremely lovely and interesting young woman".
- She is a young lady
"mentioned in very affectionate terms by my father in his letter of the 13th April 1806 dated Cork".
- About a year before, she had accepted the hand of
"a young barrister of [considerable?] talent and of good expectations as to fortune, a friend of my father".
- Miss Tuohy had no money, and the barrister's friends disapproved of the match.
They worked on both of them,
and managed to break up the match.
- She was deeply hurt and
"the effort to conceal her feelings cost her her life".
She lost her appetite and "daily wasted away".
- Mary tried to help her, and took her to Kerry in the autumn of 1806.
Miss Tuohy "seemed to rally a little.
-
Daniel and Mary set off to go back to Dublin.
She went with them, but when they were half-way to Dublin,
"the poor young lady breathed her last in one of the [illegible]
where they had stopped for the night".
Mary was disturbed for a very long time after this.
- The young man "never recovered his former spirits"
and though he became wealthy, he never married, and died still young.
Notes:
- It sounds like the girl committed suicide.
How else are we to read it?
-
Ellen would be a baby at the time, so was not a witness to these events.
As the eldest daughter, her parents may have told her about it years later.
Maybe the story was sanitised and romanticised a bit.
- Ellen does not give the girl's first name.
But she must be the cousin
Kitty Tuohy
mentioned in a
letter of 2 Apr 1806.
from Mary to Daniel in Cork.
- Ellen does not give the man's name at all (either first or surname).
Things to do:
- It seems Ellen refers to a different letter.
Find letter of Daniel O'Connell, 13 April 1806, from Cork.
- Surely there are more papers and letters about this tragedy?
