William Herbert, 18th Earl of Pembroke
William Herbert, 18th Earl of Pembroke
(and 15th Earl of Montgomery, and 7th Baron Herbert of Lea),
born 1978.
See
wikipedia and
thepeerage.
He succ as Earl when
his father died in 2003.
He is
current owner of
Wilton House.
He mar 2010 to Victoria Bullough.
They had issue:
- Alexandra Herbert.
- Reginald Herbert, Lord Herbert,
born 2012.
Heir apparent.
- Louis Herbert.
- Beatrice Herbert.
- The future of the male line:
- The 18th Earl has no close male Herbert relatives.
So for a time it looked like the male line below the
11th Earl of Pembroke
might die out.
In which case
the title of Earl of Pembroke
would go to the
Earl of Carnarvon line,
who descend from the
8th Earl of Pembroke.
My children would be more closely related than they are,
since my children descend from the 10th Earl.
- However, the 18th Earl now has two sons, so the male line here is a bit more secure.
- The Earl of Pembroke is
Hereditary Visitor of
Jesus College, Oxford.
- The statutes
of the college say:
"The Right Honourable the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery is the
Hereditary Visitor of the College".
- This started with the 3rd Earl, who became the first Visitor of the college in 1622.
- The Wilton estate includes the entire town
and a huge area of surrounding countryside
(including eight other villages).
- Although many of the ground rents have by now been sold,
the Pembroke estate in Ireland
still exists,
over 600 years after their ancestors the
Fitzwilliams
first started to acquire land in SE Dublin,
and despite Irish independence.
