Dr. Louis Humphreys,
1919 incident: During War of Independence, in Apr 1919, IRA man Robert Byrne was being held at Limerick Workhouse under RIC police guard. The IRA staged a rescue attempt which killed an RIC man. Byrne also died. This was part of a series of events which led to the setting up of the short-lived Limerick Soviet. Dr. Louis Humphreys carried out the post-mortem on the body of Byrne. See "Dr. A. Humphreys" listed in Irish Independent, April 9, 1919, as "resident medical officer" at Limerick Union (Workhouse) at inquest into death of Byrne. Incorrectly listed as "Dr. T. Humphreys" in Ch.5 of [Cahill, 1990]. |

his brother
Fr. John's death 1927.
He wit the mar of
his brother Joseph in 1930.
"Dr. A. Humphreys" is listed as "Resident Medical Officer" at "City Home and Hospital", Limerick, in
[Thoms, 1939, p.986].
He was at Nell's funeral, 10 June 1939.
He
mar June 1939 [him age 54, her age c.28] to Philomena Hickey [born c.1911, from Oola, Co.Limerick].
He appears at Limerick City Home in a 1940 episode in
the book
Angela's Ashes.
Lived "Tevere", beside Limerick City Home.
Retired 1952.
He died c.1955, age c.70 yrs.
His sister's obituary 1965 lists him as "M.O.H., Limerick" (Medical Officer of Health).
Philomena died 1979, age c.68 yrs.

He was age 10, so this is 1940.
"Dr. Humphrey" at Limerick City Home
is Dr. Louis Humphreys.
