Sir Edward Montagu



Sir Edward Montagu, Lord Chief Justice (died 1557).
Posthumous portrait, probably c.1600, by an unknown artist.
Said to be the first portrait to portray an English judge in his robes.
Several versions of this are known.

Sir Edward Montagu,
or Montague,
born c.1487,
of Hemington, Northamptonshire.

He was educ at Cambridge.
He mar 1stly, Sept 1512, to Cicely Lane [or Cecily, or Cecilia].
She was dau of William Lane of Orlingbury, Northamptonshire, by his wife Jane Mervin, dau of Hugh Mervin of Wolvey, Warwickshire.
He had issue by 1st wife:


  1. Amy Montagu,
    or Amicia, or Amey, or Anne.
    She is "Amy" in [Case of 1529-1532].
    Herald's visitation of 1564 says "Anne".
    [Green, 1877] says "Amicia".
    She mar George Lynne and had issue.
    He was her stepmother's nephew.
    Their marriage settlement is, or is dealt with in, [Case of 1529-1532]. They must be just children in an arranged marriage.
    They lived Southwick Hall, Northamptonshire.


He mar 2ndly, 1527, to Cicely Kirkham.
In 1528 he purchased Boughton, Northamptonshire, and surrounds.
Lived at Boughton.
He mar 3rdly, before May 1533, to Eleanor Roper [or Ellen].
Knighted 1537.
Lord Chief Justice of England 1539-1545.
One of executors of will of Henry VIII (died 1547).
He purchased the advowson of Southwick church, Northamptonshire, in 7th Edward VI (1553). His dau had married Lynne of Southwick Hall.
He unwillingly was made by 1st Duke of Northumberland in 1553 to alter Edward VI's will in favour of the succession of Lady Jane Grey.
On the fall of Lady Jane and the accession of Mary in July 1553, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.
He purchased his release in Sept 1553 following a heavy fine and loss of lands.
He died 10 February 1557 (new style year).
He was bur in church of St. Mary the Virgin, Weekley, Northamptonshire (near Boughton).
He had issue by 3rd wife:

    of Boughton.
