John Ruffles



John Ruffles (died 1863).

John Ruffles,
born 1792 or 1794 or 1796, Shotley, Suffolk.
He was a farmer and miller.
Lived at Trimley St. Mary: He lived at Trimley St. Mary, Suffolk. Confusingly, he also had a business in the adjacent Trimley St. Martin, Suffolk, and later he lived in Trimley St. Martin. See map. Also some of his children were born at "Falkenham".

He mar pre-1828 to Susannah Sandle [bapt 19 Oct 1800].
They are listed at Trimley St. Mary in [UK census, 1841]. He is "farmer".
He is listed at dau's birth 1843 as "farmer", living Falkenham, Suffolk (close to Trimley St. Mary, see map).
"Falkenham" does not mean Trimley St. Mary. The 1851 census shows on the same page some children born "Trimley St. Mary" and others born "Falkenham".
John Ruffles, miller and farmer, is listed in [PO Directory, 1846] at Trimley St. Martin.
They are listed at Trimley St. Mary in [UK census, 1851]. He is "farmer and miller". They have 1 servant.

John Ruffles, corn miller, Trimley St. Martin, is listed in [White's Directory of Suffolk, 1855].
John Ruffles, farmer, Trimley St. Mary, is listed in [White's Directory of Suffolk, 1855].
John Ruffles, corn miller, listed at Woodbridge Tide Mill, Woodbridge, Suffolk, in [White's Directory of Suffolk, 1855]. It says he is also of Trimley.
He is listed in [UK census, 1861] as living Farm House, apparently 66 Trimley St, Trimley St. Mary, Suffolk. He is listed as "Farmer Of 165 Acres Employing 5 Men & 2 Boys". They have 1 servant.

John dies, 1863:
He moved to Trimley St. Martin.
At death he is listed as John Ruffles, miller and farmer, formerly of Trimley St. Mary, Suffolk, late of Trimley St. Martin, Suffolk.
He died 20 Feb 1863, Trimley St. Martin [GRO.UK].
He was bur Trimley St.Mary / Trimley St.Martin.
Will pr at Ipswich, 25 May 1863, by Susannah Ruffles of Ipswich, widow. The executors are Joseph Wells and his son Joseph Leonard Wells (who later married Ruffles' daughter).

He is listed as "miller" (deceased) at dau Eliza Jane's mar 1865.

Susannah is listed in [UK census, 1871] as widow, age 70, living 83 Victoria Street, St Matthew's Parish, Ipswich (see map). She is living with one servant and a lodger. She is listed as "Landed And House Proprietor".
Listed as of Ipswich at death.
She died at Ipswich, 26 Jan 1875, age 74 yrs.
She was bur Trimley St.Mary / Trimley St.Martin.
Will proved 4 Mar 1875. See probate.
John and Susannah had issue:


  1. James Sandle Ruffles,
    born 7 Mar 1828, Trimley, eldest son,
    bapt 20 May 1828, Trimley Saint Martin.
    Not found with parents in 1841 census.
    See Ruffles family bible, which was a gift to "James Sandle Ruffles" from his mother, 8 Mar 1850.
    He is listed in 1851 census at Hasketon, Suffolk. He is a "miller" with one employee.
    He died 7 Apr 1854, age 26 yrs.

    He was bur Trimley St.Mary / Trimley St.Martin.


  2. Ellen Ruffles,
    Ellen Susanna Ruffles,
    born 4 Oct 1829, Trimley St. Mary,
    apparently bapt 18 July 1834, Falkenham,
    at home in 1851 census.
    She mar 1854, Trimley St. Mary, to Josiah Brown [bapt 26 Dec 1828, Bentley, Suffolk] and had issue.
    Josiah wit the mar of Ellen's sister Eliza Jane in 1865.
    He died 23 Feb 1869, Ipswich, age 40 yrs.
    Will proved 25 Mar 1869. See entry.
    She died 1903, Felixstowe, Suffolk, age 74 yrs.


  3. John Ruffles,
    John Sandle Ruffles,
    born 7 Aug 1831, Trimley St. Mary, or poss. 8 Aug, 2nd son,
    bapt 8 Sept 1831, Trimley St. Mary.
    Living at home in 1851 census, he is "Miller".
    He mar 1851-57 to Elizabeth King [born 1822] and had issue.
    He died 24 Mar 1887, Walton, Suffolk, age 55 yrs.
    He was bur Trimley St.Mary / Trimley St.Martin.
    She died 1902, Walton, age 80 yrs.

  5. Eliza Jane Ruffles,
    born "Mary Jane", 12 noon, 27 Oct 1843, Falkenham, Suffolk [GRO.UK],

    apparently bapt 25 May 1845, Falkenham,
    listed as just "Jane" in 1851 census and at son's bapt 1867.
