Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte and the Earls of Pembroke
Bridgerton (2020),
filmed partly at Wilton,
is an alternative history American show, where much of Regency London is black.
It showcases the crank theory that
Queen Charlotte
was black.
Why mention this?
I mention it because people actually believe this crank theory.
In fact, because of Bridgerton,
it is probably becoming the most widely believed fake history
about this period.
It is strange to see this imaginary version of Queen Charlotte being filmed at Wilton,
since in
real life, the 10th Earl of Pembroke
and his wife were close to George III and Queen Charlotte:
The 10th Earl was a Lord of the Bedchamber to the King.
His wife was Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen.
The King and Queen stayed with them at Wilton House on their
1778 visit.
Letters survive
from the Queen to the family
in
WSHC 2057/F4/47.
The 10th Earl and his wife would have been utterly baffled by this show!
