Marriage of Alexander Yeats and Elizabeth Leslie, 20 June 1748.
See full size.

Alexander Yeats,
or Yates.
Listed as "merchant" at marriage.
He mar 20 June 1748 to Elizabeth Leslie [bapt 1723, descendant of Robert III, King of Scotland and of Henry I].
Alexander was a merchant in Rotterdam, Holland.
Many Scottish merchants traded through Rotterdam at this time, and often went to live there.
His children were bapt in Aberdeen in 1750 to 1756.

Moves to Holland before 1765:
He went to live in Holland. Took his family.
He was active in the Scots Church, Rotterdam.
"Alexander Yeats" and his (unnamed) wife were added on 20 Oct 1765 to the List of Members of the Scots Church, Rotterdam. He is listed as a "deacon".
He was a Deacon of the Scots Church, Rotterdam, from 1765 to 1773.
He is listed as merchant in Rotterdam at his dau Barbara's mar 1769.
He was an Elder of the Scots Church, Rotterdam, from 1773 to 1776.
He may have died or gone back to Scotland in 1776.
Alexander and Elizabeth had issue:

  1. Barbara Yeats,
    born 16 July 1749.
She would be named after her grandmother Barbara Ædie.
She was apparently born in Scotland, moved with father to Holland before 1765, and then came back to Scotland with marriage 1769.
"Barbara Yates" was added to list of Members of Scots Church, Rotterdam on 2 Apr 1767.
She mar 16 Aug 1769 to Capt. Robert Gibbon [born 23 Aug 1738] and had issue.
They mar at the Scots Church, Rotterdam.
She was age 20, he was age 30. See marriage entry under G.
They were married by Rev. William Walker (father of Rev. Robert Walker, "The Skating Minister").

  2. Elizabeth Yeats.
"Elizabeth Yates" was bapt 14 Aug 1750 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen], dau of "Alexander Yates", merchant, and Elizabeth Leslie. See entry.
"Elizabeth Yates" was added to list of Members of Scots Church, Rotterdam on 2 Apr 1767.
She might be "Miss Yeats" who witnessed the baptism of Elizabeth Gibbon 1770.
She mar Alexander Martin and had issue.

  3. William Yeats.
"William Yates" was bapt 19 July 1755 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen], son of "Alexander Yates", merchant. No mother's name given. See entry.
The baptism entry refers to the date (written slightly wrongly) of the baptism of Anne below, indicating this is the same family.

  4. Anna Yeats.
Fasti ecclesiae scoticanae has her as "Anna".
[Steven, 1833] has her as "Anne".
"Anne Yates" was bapt 7 Nov 1756 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen], dau of "Alexander Yates", merchant, and his wife --- Ross. See entry.
The baptism entry refers to the date of the baptism of William above, indicating this is the same family.
The wife's name is unexplained. No 2nd marriage of Alexander with Ross is found. Barbara Yates Gibbon has Elizabeth Leslie as mother of the four children. The most likely explanation is the parish register is wrong.

"Anna Yeats" was added to list of Members of Scots Church, Rotterdam on 29 Sept 1772.
She mar 1780 to Rev. James Somerville [born Oct 1747] and had issue.
He was Minister of the Scots Church, Rotterdam.
