Stephen Creagh Sandes



Stephen Creagh Sandes, born 1802.
He mar 1841 to Mary Anne Ponsonby [born 1819, descendant of Henry VII].
[McMorran and O'Keeffe, 2005] says he lived in Ballylongford before Oak Park.

He became agent for his brother when his brother bought Oak Park, near Tralee, Co.Kerry, in 1852.
Lived for a time at the big house at Oak Park.
Described as of Oak Park, Tralee, at dau's bapt 1853.
His brother moved into Oak Park 1857.
He moved in 1857 to nearby Oakvilla (also called "Oakville" or "Oak Ville", formerly called Annville), leased it from the Payne/Benner family.
Described as of "Oak Ville", Tralee, at dau's bapt 1863.
His mother-in-law died at his residence Oakvilla in 1864.

Stephen dies, 1866:
He died at Oakvilla, 10 Dec 1866 [GROI], [Burkes Irish, 1912], or 11 Dec [NAI], age 64 yrs.

Mary Anne dies, 1893:
She is listed at her death 1893 as at Spring Mount, Shankill, Co.Dublin (see old map).
Spring Mount or "Springmount" still exists (on Ferndale Rd, see street view).
She died 29 Dec 1893, at Spring Mount, Shankill, age 74 yrs. See death in [GROI].
She was bur Deansgrange Cemetery, see burial record.
Stephen and Mary Anne had issue:


  1. Thomas William Sandes,
    born 1842,
    father died 1866,
    continued to live at Oakvilla, Oak Park, near Tralee,
    big supporter of his 1st cousin Rowland Ponsonby Blennerhassett who became Home Rule MP in 1872,
    mar 1873 to Amy Macnamara [Amelia Sarah, or Sarah Amy],
    his sister was living Oakvilla at her mar, Jan 1874,
    he inherited Sallow Glen when his uncle died, June 1874,
    he gave up the lease of Oakvilla by 1879,
    living Sallow Glen as at 1912,
    he died 1913, Ennis Road, Limerick, age 71 yrs,
    had issue:


    1. Eva Maude Sandes,
      born 1876,
      mar 1904 to John Kinahan [of Belfast],
      at her death she is listed as living Derbyshire,
      she died 1954, Bakewell, Derbyshire, see probate,
      at his death 1955 he is listed as living Belfast,
      he died 1955, see probate.


    2. Amy Margaret Sandes,
      or Margaret Amy, born 1878.
      She mar 1906 to Capt. Hugh Heneage Finch [or Heneagh].
      He was of the family of Finch of Maryville, Croom, Co.Limerick.
      They lived Maryville.
      They lived Sallow Glen after her father died 1913.
      See entry in [Walford's County Families, 1919], which shows them at both Maryville and Sallow Glen.
      They were living Sallow Glen as at 1924 [Houses of Kerry].
      They sold Sallow Glen c.1929.
      He died 1944.


  2. Honoria Sandes,
    born 15 March 1844,
    bapt 22 April 1844 [Kilnaughtin CoI par records].
    She mar 22 Feb 1866 [Tralee CoI par records]
    to Capt. James McGillycuddy Magill [born 1837] and had issue.


  3. Ponsonby Carrigue Sandes,
    thus listed, rather than Ponsonby Carrique Sandes, see family spelling,
    born 1849,
    listed as unmarried, "Landowner", at death,
    died 20 July 1918, Hampstead, Glasnevin, Co.Dublin, age 69 yrs, see death in [GROI],
    admin granted 21 Oct 1918, see entry at [NAI].


  4. Elise Sandes,
    Elizabeth, Eliza Anne, "Elise Ann",
    born 19 February 1851 [Adrian Sandes],
    founder of the Sandes Homes for Soldiers and Airmen,
    awarded CBE,
    died 1934, bur Tyrella Cemetery, Downpatrick, Co.Down,
    big funeral, attended by, among others, Lord Craigavon, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.


  5. Mary Anne Sandes,
    bapt 29 October 1853 [Tralee CoI par records],
    must have died young (there is a second Mary Anne).


  6. Margaret Sandes,
    mar 19 Jan 1874 [Tralee CoI par records] to Capt. Charles More Stockley and had issue.


  7. Frances Sandes.


  8. Emily Sandes,
    mar c.1880 to Percy Ripley Wilson [of Los Angeles, CA] and had issue.


  9. Ellen Louise Sandes [or Ellen Louisa],
    emigrated to US,
    mar Richard Quain,
    she died 1900,
    he died c.1903,
    both bur St.Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, in Auburn, New York,
    had issue:
    1. Katherine Quain, died 25 February 1925, bur St.Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Auburn.


  10. Kathleen Sandes,
    bapt Mary Anne Kathleen Sandes, 16 March 1863 [Tralee CoI par records] (and here),
    mar 3 September 1890, Kibroney, Rostrevor, Co.Down, to Harry Harris Were [of the East Lancashire Regiment].
